Recommended Free Tools
Yes. Google’s current Gemini Apps plan comparison lists Gems for users without a Google AI plan as well as for paid subscribers. Free access does not guarantee the same usage limits or availability in every account: Google says limits can depend on factors such as prompt complexity, selected models and features, and conversation length, and some features may be restricted during high demand.
What Gemini Gems do
A Gem is a customized version of Gemini built around instructions for a particular topic, task, or goal. You give it instructions and a name, then return to it in chat rather than repeating the same setup each time. Google’s launch examples included a learning coach, brainstormer, career guide, writing editor, and coding partner. Gems are reusable configurations of Gemini, not separate products.
How access changed from the launch
Google announced Gems on August 28, 2024, initially for Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users. The company said the rollout was beginning on desktop and mobile in more than 150 countries and most languages; that figure describes the 2024 launch announcement, not current country-by-country coverage. Google’s current plan comparison now lists Gems for accounts without a Google AI plan, as well as for AI Plus, AI Pro, and AI Ultra subscribers.
That is the “trickle-down” change: Gems started as a paid-tier feature and are now listed for the no-plan tier. Google’s current help documentation does not establish that every account has identical access or limits. See Google’s 2024 launch announcement and the current Gemini Apps plan and limits information.

What differs between free and paid access
Google describes Gemini usage limits as compute-based rather than a single fixed allowance. Limits may depend on prompt complexity, the models and features selected, and the length of a conversation. Its documentation lists standard limits for users without a Google AI plan and higher limits for paid plans; it does not present paid access as a requirement to use Gems.
Google also cautions that feature availability and usage limits can change. During high demand, some compute-intensive features may be unavailable to users without a plan. Because availability can depend on account and location, the current plan page and the feature options shown in your own Gemini account are the best checks for your situation.

What to check if Gems are not available
- Check Google’s current Gemini Apps limits and plan comparison for the latest listed access.
- Look in your Gemini account to see whether Gems are available for your account and location; the 2024 launch coverage statement is not a current availability guarantee.
- If you can use Gems but reach a limit, remember that Google says usage can vary with the request, model, features, and conversation length. Paid plans have higher limits, but their limits and feature availability can also change.
