Tesla canceled its planned Cybertruck range extender, an optional battery pack designed to sit in the pickup bed—not a component needed for the truck to operate. Futurism reported on May 9, 2025, that reservation holders were told the $16,000 accessory would not be sold and that their $2,000 deposits would be refunded. Tesla gave no official reason in the cited report.
What did Tesla cancel?
The canceled item was a bed-mounted battery pack intended to increase the Cybertruck’s driving range. It was an optional accessory, not the Cybertruck itself or a required part of the vehicle. Futurism reported the cancellation and the notices to customers; the customer emails are not reproduced in its cited account.
Futurism said the planned price was $16,000 and that customers had paid a $2,000 reservation fee. The report said Tesla told those reservation holders the range extender was no longer being sold and that the deposits would be refunded. These are figures and details reported in May 2025, not evidence of a currently available product or sale.
Why did Tesla cancel the Cybertruck range extender?
Tesla did not provide an official cancellation reason in the reporting cited by Futurism. Low demand, the accessory’s price, production challenges, and broader sales pressure may be relevant context, but none is established as Tesla’s stated reason for ending the plan.

The wording “with sales plummeting” also needs qualification. The available delivery data does not provide a separate Cybertruck sales total, so it cannot establish a precise Cybertruck trend by itself.
How much range was the extender supposed to add?
The reported range target changed during development. Futurism reported an initial advertised target of 470 miles, later revised to 445 miles, and a release schedule that had slipped to mid-2025 before the cancellation. Those figures describe announced plans, not independently tested range or results from a product customers could buy.

Did Tesla refund Cybertruck range-extender deposits?
According to Futurism’s May 9, 2025 report, reservation holders who had paid $2,000 were notified that the range extender would not be sold and would receive refunds. The report attributed confirmation to Electrek’s outreach to Tesla; it did not reproduce the customer emails, so the refund details are reported rather than independently verified here.

The cited delivery coverage does not establish a separate Cybertruck delivery count. Tesla’s October 2, 2026 release reported more than 486,000 total vehicle deliveries for Q3 2026, but that is a company-wide figure and does not isolate the Cybertruck.

Electrek reported 8,295 Q3 2026 deliveries in Tesla’s “Other Models” category, down 48% year over year, and noted that Tesla does not disclose Cybertruck deliveries separately. That category may include vehicles beyond the Cybertruck, so 8,295 is not an exact Cybertruck sales figure; it is only a broad category-level indicator.
