Snull (“Simple Network Utility”) is a software-only network interface example from Linux Device Drivers. It has no physical network card behind it: the sample uses memory to simulate communication between remote hosts so readers can study how a network driver interacts with Linux’s networking stack. It is a teaching example, not a general-purpose virtual interface or a replacement for a hardware driver.
What Snull is—and what it is not
The book describes Snull as a “memory-based modularized network interface.” In practice, it provides an example of the structure and behavior involved in a Linux network driver without requiring a physical network device. Its purpose is to make driver concepts easier to follow, not to provide a production networking solution.
- Software-only: no physical NIC is required or controlled by Snull.
- A remote-host simulation: it models traffic between hosts to illustrate driver behavior.
- Not the Linux loopback interface: both are software-based, but Snull is designed to represent communication between remote hosts for instructional purposes.
What the example teaches
The Snull chapter introduces how a network interface connects to the kernel and discusses registering network-device structures. The surrounding material also explains transmission and reception, making the sample a way to see networking-driver concepts in context rather than merely read their definitions. The chapter appears in Linux Device Drivers, Second Edition, published in 2001.
Why Snull is limited to IP traffic
Snull supports IP traffic only. Its packet transformations can damage non-IP packets, so it should not be treated as a transparent interface for arbitrary network protocols. That limitation is important if you encounter the sample while exploring or adapting old code: it is built to illustrate selected driver concepts, not to handle all traffic safely.

Should you use Snull on a current Linux system?
Use it to study historical driver design, not as a ready-to-build template for a current kernel. The example comes from a 2001 book, and the available sources do not establish that it builds against present-day kernels. Kernel APIs and driver conventions can change; anyone implementing a current network driver should consult current kernel documentation and source rather than assume the historical sample remains compatible.
Reusing the historical source
The source header permits use, adaptation, and redistribution in source or binary form on the condition that derived source files include an acknowledgment identifying Linux Device Drivers by Alessandro Rubini and Jonathan Corbet, published by O’Reilly. The same header disclaims warranty and responsibility for errors or fitness for use. Check the source and applicable terms before reusing the code; this summary is not legal advice. The cited code is a mirror of the example, not a current kernel-maintainer statement.
