To group tabs in Microsoft Edge, right-click a tab and select Add tab to group. Create a group or add the tab to an existing one, then give the group a name and color. You can collapse a group by selecting its name, or use Organize tabs for automatic grouping when that option is available.
How to create and customize an Edge tab group
- Right-click a tab. To group several tabs at once, select the tabs first, then right-click the selection.
- Choose Add tab to group, then create a new group or choose an existing group.
- Enter a recognizable name and select a color. Microsoft examples include names such as “News,” “School,” and “Trip planning.”
Tab Groups keep related tabs together in the browser’s tab strip. You can rename or recolor a group later from its group controls. Microsoft’s instructions and examples are on its Tab Groups feature page.
How to collapse, expand and revisit groups
Select a group name in the tab strip to collapse it; select the name again to expand it. Collapsing hides the group’s individual tabs from the strip without removing the group. Microsoft says Tab Groups work with both classic and vertical tabs. Its documentation also describes groups as automatically pinned by default and available to revisit after closing Edge, but the precise saving behavior can vary with browser build, settings and rollout. See Microsoft’s feature instructions and Stable Channel release notes.
How to group tabs automatically with Organize tabs
- Open the Search tabs menu beside the tabs.
- Select Organize tabs.
- Review the suggested groups, names and colors, and adjust them to suit your needs.
Edge can group tabs based on relevance, but its suggestions are a convenience rather than a guarantee that the categories will match your preferences. Microsoft notes that availability and functionality can vary by device, market and browser version. The official feature page documents the option.

Tab Groups or Workspaces: which should you use?
Use Tab Groups to organize related pages within a browser tab strip. Workspaces are intended to keep tabs together around a project or activity in a separate browser window. They are related features, but they serve different scopes.
| Question | Tab Groups | Current individual-use Workspaces |
|---|---|---|
| What they organize | Related tabs within the browser tab strip; groups can have names and colors. | Tabs for a project or activity in a workspace window. |
| How to start | Right-click tab(s) and choose Add tab to group. | Open the Workspaces menu and create a blank workspace or one using current tabs. |
| Sharing | Organizes tabs; it is not a shared workspace feature. | Microsoft’s current individual-use version does not support sharing, collaboration or inviting others. |
| Requirements | Availability can vary by device, market and Edge version. | Microsoft specifies Edge 144 or later on desktop Windows 10/11 or macOS, with an MSA or Azure Active Directory account. |
| Storage and sync | Check Edge Sync settings for the Tab Groups toggle. | The new version does not require OneDrive storage; cross-device availability requires sync to be enabled. |
Requirements and current-use details are from Microsoft’s Workspaces support article. Older Microsoft enterprise documentation describes a collaborative Workspaces experience; do not assume those instructions or sharing features apply to the newer individual-use version: Microsoft Edge Workspaces for enterprise.

How saving and sync work
To check the relevant controls, open Settings > Profile > Sync and look for Workspaces and Tab Groups. Edge lets users configure sync by feature or data type; Microsoft’s sync settings guide explains the profile Sync page.
Microsoft’s Stable Channel notes describe a migration of Workspaces from OneDrive/SharePoint storage to Edge Sync, with a progressive rollout beginning in Edge 145 and continuing through Edge 148. The notes say that organizations disabling Sync through policy will have existing V1 Workspace data migrated, while new V2 Workspaces created after migration remain local to each device. The outcome therefore depends on the installed build, rollout status and organization policy; consult the current Edge Stable Channel release notes and your Sync settings for your account’s behavior.
