Google announced on January 9, 2026, that reactions would be enabled by default for Workspace domains starting February 9, 2026. Administrators can manage the setting in the Admin console; the announcement did not say that personal Gmail accounts received the same default change.
What changed—and who it affects
Google introduced emoji reactions in Gmail in 2025 as an opt-in feature for early Workspace customer access. Its original announcement said the administrator control would be off by default. In January 2026, Google announced a change for Workspace: the setting would default to on beginning February 9, 2026, for domains on both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release. That default change is distinct from feature availability. Google’s 2025 announcement said emoji reactions were available to Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and people using personal Google accounts. It did not establish that personal accounts would also have the feature enabled by default. Google’s April 29, 2025 announcement
How a Workspace administrator can manage the default
Google placed the control in the Admin console at Apps > Gmail > End User Access > Emoji reactions. For organizations that did not want the setting enabled by default, Google advised administrators to make sure it was unchecked and click Save before February 9, 2026. Google said administrators could disable the setting at any time.
