The files were described as technical and corporate material; the reported size was a media estimate, not a measurement Intel issued. Intel said the information appeared to come from its Resource and Design Center and that it believed someone with access had downloaded and shared it. The route by which the files were obtained was not independently established in the contemporaneous accounts.
What was reported in the Intel document dump?
CyberScoop described the cache as mostly training manuals and technical documents for software and firmware development kits. It also reported a section marked “Intel Restricted Secret” containing information about a March 2020 version of Intel’s Kaby Lake platform silicon initialization code, which worked with Intel BIOS. BleepingComputer listed other examples, including Intel Management Engine material, BIOS reference code, development and debugging tools, and platform files.
CyberScoop and BleepingComputer both described the cache as about 20 GB. That figure reflected contemporaneous media reporting, not an official Intel file-size statement. CyberScoop said the documents it examined included some marked “confidential.” Those labels described document markings; they did not establish that the files were government-classified.
What did Intel say about how the files got out?
In a statement quoted by BleepingComputer on August 6, 2020, an Intel spokesperson said: “We are investigating this situation. The information appears to come from the Intel Resource and Design Center, which hosts information for use by our customers, partners and other external parties who have registered for access. We believe an individual with access downloaded and shared this data”.

Intel’s account pointed to material hosted for registered external users and to a person with access sharing it. Separately, BleepingComputer relayed an anonymous source’s claim, passed on by Tillie Kottmann, that an unsecured server had been involved. Intel did not confirm that acquisition method in the quoted statement, so the account did not prove that a network intrusion occurred.
Did the leak include customer or employee data?
CyberScoop said its cursory examination found no personally identifiable information about Intel employees or customers in the files it reviewed. That finding applied only to the examined files; it did not establish what every file in the cache contained or rule out every possible consequence of publication.
