China’s Shenlong spaceplane appears to have released an unidentified object during its fourth orbital mission, but its identity and purpose have not been publicly confirmed. LeoLabs said it detected the object near Shenlong on June 22, 2026, and assessed with high confidence that it had been released by the spaceplane. Later reporting described the object looping around another Chinese satellite before returning toward Shenlong. Those observations do not establish that the object was a weapon or reveal the mission’s intent.
What happened in orbit?
Shenlong launched on February 6, 2026, aboard a Long March 2F rocket from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert. It was the vehicle’s fourth reported orbital mission.
At 02:30 UTC on June 22, LeoLabs detected an unknown object in Shenlong’s vicinity. The company said its first observation came from its Tracker radar in New Zealand. After additional observations across its network and analysis, LeoLabs assessed with high confidence that Shenlong had released the object. The initial account did not identify it. Space.com’s report quoting LeoLabs describes the detection and assessment.
In a September 2, 2026 report, Reuters said LeoLabs tracking indicated that the object looped around another Chinese satellite and then returned toward Shenlong. This is a reported account of the object’s movement, not an explanation of what it was doing. Reuters’ report attributes the account to LeoLabs data.

Does the object’s movement indicate a military purpose?
Not by itself. Moving close to another spacecraft and maneuvering around it are examples of rendezvous and proximity operations, or RPO. Such maneuvers can be used for tasks such as inspection or servicing, while the same broad capabilities can also raise military concerns. The reported loop and return therefore provide context about observed behavior, but do not establish the object’s mission or intent.
Shenlong has been reported releasing objects on earlier flights as well. In June 2024, observers thought it might have released a subsatellite or jettisoned hardware; six objects suspected of release in late 2023 were later determined to be launch debris. These earlier observations make releases a recurring feature of reporting about the vehicle, not proof that the 2026 object had the same nature or purpose. Space.com’s background report discusses that history and previous reported proximity operations.

What has China said about Shenlong?
China’s official public description, quoted by Space.com, says tests of the spaceplane’s technology “will pave the way for more convenient and affordable round-trip methods for the peaceful use of space in the future.” That is a general description of the program; it does not identify or explain the June 2026 object. Public reporting cited here does not disclose the full objectives of Shenlong’s fourth flight.
