To find out whether an SSD, RAM kit, or power supply will work in your PC, start with the exact computer or motherboard model—not just the component’s name or advertised specs. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and manual, then match the component’s interface, dimensions, supported configuration, connectors, and clearance to your system.
Compatibility is a fit check, not a product ranking: the right SSD, memory kit, and PSU depend on the specific motherboard or prebuilt PC, CPU, graphics card, case, and other installed parts.
Start with your exact PC or motherboard model
Find the full model name of your prebuilt PC or motherboard and use its manufacturer support page, specifications, and manual. The motherboard determines which memory and storage devices can connect, while system and case details can add further restrictions. Intel’s motherboard buying guide explains the role of the board’s supported connections and formats.
For a prebuilt computer, prioritize documentation for the exact system. Compact desktops and laptops may use different drive or memory formats, and their available slots, clearances, and upgrade limits may differ from those of a generic desktop motherboard.

How to check SSD compatibility
First identify the storage connections your system actually supports: for example, a 2.5-inch SATA connection or one or more M.2 slots. Do not assume that a drive will work simply because it fits a connector or is described as M.2.
Check an M.2 drive’s interface, key, and length
M.2 describes a physical form factor, not a single storage protocol. M.2 drives can use SATA or PCIe/NVMe, and the slot must support the drive’s interface. Intel’s guide to choosing a motherboard explains that M.2 devices use different interfaces and keying, which affect socket compatibility.
- Look up each M.2 slot’s supported interface: SATA, PCIe/NVMe, or both.
- Match the drive’s key and physical length to the slot and the lengths listed in the motherboard specifications.
- Read notes about shared lanes or ports. Using one slot may disable or affect another connection on some boards.
- Confirm that the system supports PCIe/NVMe specifically before buying an NVMe drive. Intel’s PCIe NVMe installation guidance says NVMe requires specific motherboard or system support and advises checking with the system or motherboard vendor.
An M.2 slot is not automatically an NVMe slot. If a manual lists only SATA support for a particular slot, an NVMe drive is not made compatible by sharing the M.2 shape.

Check a 2.5-inch SATA drive
For a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, confirm that the PC has an available SATA data connection and an appropriate SATA power connection. An M.2 slot does not replace either connection. Check the system manual for mounting points, cables, and physical clearance; Intel’s installation instructions direct users to their system or chassis documentation for installation details.
Compare SSDs only after confirming fit
Once a drive is physically and electrically compatible, compare capacity, performance, endurance, warranty, and price as separate buying criteria. Compatibility information alone does not establish which SSD is best for a particular use.
How to check RAM kit compatibility
Memory must match the platform, not merely the slot shape. Verify the motherboard and CPU’s supported DDR generation, capacity, module configuration, and speed before choosing a kit.

Match DDR generation and configuration
- Check that the kit’s DDR generation matches what the motherboard and CPU support. DDR4 and DDR5 modules are not interchangeable.
- Check total capacity, number of modules, and capacity per module against the board’s specifications and manual.
- Confirm the supported DIMM configuration and memory speed for your particular CPU and board combination.
Specifications can depend on the processor. For example, ASUS’s PRIME Z590-P specifications list memory support for that specific model and note that supported frequency depends on CPU type. Those figures should not be applied to other motherboards.
Look up the exact kit in the memory QVL
Search the motherboard maker’s CPU and memory Qualified Vendor List (QVL) for the kit’s exact model number. ASUS explains how to locate and search its list in How to query CPU/memory QVL list? The QVL is specific to a board; a listed kit has been checked for that motherboard, while a missing listing is not proof that the kit is incompatible.

A kit’s advertised profile speed may require enabling a memory profile or otherwise operating beyond default settings. Check the board and CPU instructions to see what is supported and what settings are required. Do not treat a kit’s advertised speed as a guaranteed default speed for every system.

How to check power supply compatibility
A PSU must power the complete system, fit in the case, and provide the right connections for the motherboard, CPU, graphics card, drives, and other powered devices. A wattage recommendation cannot be made from the PSU question alone; it depends on the complete parts list.
Check power needs and connectors
- Estimate the needs of the whole build, paying particular attention to the CPU and graphics card requirements.
- Confirm the PSU has the motherboard main-power and CPU power connections your system requires.
- Check the graphics card’s specified power connector arrangement and ensure the PSU provides the required connections. Intel’s power supply guide identifies common motherboard, CPU, and GPU power connections and recommends checking the PSU against the GPU’s requirements.
- Count SATA power connections if the system has SATA drives or other devices that use them. Intel’s ATX 3.0 design guide specifies SATA power connector requirements.
Connector names and counts are not enough if the cable arrangement does not meet the component maker’s requirements; check the exact graphics card and PSU documentation.
Check case fit and modular cables
Verify the PSU’s physical format and length against the case specifications, including clearance for cable routing. For modular PSUs, use only cables confirmed by the PSU manufacturer for that exact model. Do not assume cables from another PSU—even one from the same brand—are interchangeable; consult the PSU manual or manufacturer.

Evaluate quality separately from compatibility
After confirming fit and connections, evaluate build quality, warranty, protections, noise, and efficiency certification as separate purchase criteria. Compatibility guidance does not establish a best PSU or rank current models.
Compare options using the right criteria
If multiple products fit, separate must-match compatibility requirements from preferences that help you choose between compatible options.
Quick Recap
| Component | Compatibility checks | Other buying criteria |
|---|---|---|

Use this quick compatibility check before buying
- Identify the system: record the exact PC or motherboard model, and the CPU, graphics card, and case where relevant.
- Open the manufacturer documentation: use the specifications and manual for the exact model, plus its support page for memory lists or updates.
- Check the component’s connection and fit: verify SSD protocol and dimensions, RAM generation and configuration, or PSU dimensions and connectors.
- Check interactions and limits: look for shared storage ports, CPU-dependent memory support, system-specific upgrade restrictions, and cable-routing clearance.
- Compare compatible choices: weigh performance, capacity, warranty, quality, noise, and price only after the required compatibility conditions are met.
