Equipment can become radioactive when industrial processes bring naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) to the surface and concentrate it in scale, sludge, sediment or on equipment surfaces. In oil and gas equipment, radium and its decay products may be more relevant than uranium itself. The hazard varies by component and deposit, so a visual check or the phrase “uranium-bearing” cannot establish what is present or how risky it is.
How naturally radioactive material ends up in equipment
Uranium, thorium, radium and other radionuclides occur naturally in geological formations. Industrial activity can bring these materials into contact with produced water, drilling materials and equipment. When a process changes the material’s concentration or exposure pathways, the resulting waste or residue may be described as technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material (TENORM).
In oil and gas formations, uranium and thorium are relatively insoluble in water, while decay products such as radium can dissolve in formation brines. As produced brine reaches the surface and operating conditions change, radium may remain in produced water or accumulate in sludge and mineral scale. Radium-226 and radium-228 can coprecipitate with barium sulfate scale inside well tubing and surface equipment. The UK Health and Safety Executive describes naturally occurring radium and its decay products building up over time as scale in pipes and vessels (HSE guidance on NORM).
Contaminated material can include scale, sludge, drilling mud, sediment, equipment internals and surfaces. “Uranium-bearing equipment” is therefore not a precise description of the hazard: a component may contain uranium or thorium, their radioactive daughter products, or a mixture. In oilfield scale, radium and later decay products can be especially relevant. The radionuclide profile has to be determined for the specific material rather than inferred from its industry or label. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains the movement of radionuclides into oil and gas wastes and equipment in its TENORM in oil and gas production guidance.

Why the amount of radioactivity varies
Equipment does not have one standard level of contamination. The amount and type of radioactive material depend on factors including regional geology, the process, the equipment and the deposits that formed. Equipment cannot be classified by appearance alone.
The EPA reports an estimated average radium concentration in oilfield scale of 17.76 Bq/g (480 pCi/g), with reported values reaching 14,800 Bq/g (400,000 pCi/g), depending on regional geology. These are source-reported figures illustrating variability—not measurements for a particular component, expected dose rates or clearance limits. The EPA also notes that lead-210 may occur in gas-well scale and equipment, and that contamination varies among equipment types and locations (EPA oil and gas TENORM information).

How exposure can occur
Potential exposure depends on the radionuclides and amount present, the component’s shielding and condition, time spent nearby, distance, and whether contaminated deposits can be disturbed. Two broad pathways matter:
- External exposure: radiation can reach a person from contaminated material or equipment.
- Internal exposure: disturbing deposits can create contaminated dust that may be inhaled or transferred to the mouth and ingested.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) identifies scale, sludge and drilling mud as materials in which NORM may be elevated. Its oil and gas extraction hazard guidance discusses workplace risks; the EPA also addresses exposure pathways for contaminated materials.

What to do if equipment is suspected to be contaminated
For workers, owners and contractors, the safe response is to pause routine work and route the component through the site’s radiation-safety or health-and-safety process. Do not treat an unverified reading, clean appearance or ordinary PPE as proof that the equipment is safe. Assessment should be performed by competent personnel using appropriate radiation monitoring and the employer’s radiation-protection program.
- Stop work that could disturb deposits. Do not casually open, cut, scrape, grind, blast or clean suspected scale or sludge. Disturbing it may create contaminated dust and additional waste.
- Notify the responsible site contact. Follow the employer’s radiation-safety, health-and-safety or hazardous-material reporting process so trained staff can assess the component and task.
- Assess the material and planned work. The assessment needs to account for radionuclide composition and activity, whether contamination is internal or external, the potential for airborne material, the task and duration, and the applicable jurisdiction.
- Use controls defined for the characterized hazard. Work methods, monitoring, protective measures and waste handling should be set by qualified personnel under the applicable program and rules—not chosen from a generic consumer checklist.
- Confirm regulatory requirements before handling, transport or disposal. Requirements vary by location and by the activity involved.
Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission guidance says NORM-contaminated equipment and waste should be handled only by a person with appropriate radiation training (CNSC information on NORM). This does not make one work method suitable everywhere; the competent assessment and local rules determine the controls.

Which rules apply depends on where the work occurs
There is no single worldwide clearance threshold or disposal rule to apply without knowing the location and circumstances. Workplace protection, waste management and transport may be covered by different authorities.
- United Kingdom: HSE workplace requirements under IRR17 apply to specified NORM work above relevant levels. Depending on risk, notification or registration may be required. Radioactive waste activities may also require Environment Agency permits; its guidance identifies contaminated pumps, process vessels and pipework as possible waste equipment (Environment Agency guidance for NORM industries).
- Canada: Provinces and territories regulate NORM handling and disposal. Federal CNSC rules apply to transport, import and export. The CNSC’s NORM guidance outlines these responsibilities.
- United States: OSHA provides workplace hazard guidance, while state TENORM and waste requirements can differ. Applicable rules depend on the state and the planned activity.
A household radiation detector, visual inspection or generic PPE recommendation is not a substitute for competent industrial characterization and compliance with the rules that apply to the work.
