Choose a portable power station by calculating the energy your devices need, checking that the unit can handle their running watts and startup surge, and confirming that its charging inputs fit your plans. Battery capacity alone does not tell you how long a device will run: AC conversion losses, reserve capacity, station consumption, and real-world device use all affect usable energy.
Capacity and output answer different questions
Capacity, measured in watt-hours (Wh), describes stored energy and helps estimate runtime. Output, measured in watts (W), describes how much power the station can supply at a given moment. A large battery cannot run a load if the inverter cannot supply its required power.
For devices expected to operate at the same time, add their running watts and compare the total with the station’s continuous AC output. Then check startup surge separately: refrigerators, pumps, and other motor-driven appliances may briefly draw more power when starting. Compare the appliance’s startup requirement with the station’s surge rating; do not assume a high continuous rating guarantees adequate surge capacity.
Estimate the capacity you need
Calculate energy use
For each device, estimate energy as watts × hours = watt-hours. A 100W average load running for eight hours uses 800Wh before losses. That is a planning calculation, not a promise of runtime from an 800Wh station.

- WHAT YOU GET: 1* Jackery Explorer 300 Portable Power Station, 1*AC adapter, 1* car charger cable, 1* user guide (𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐝.)
- List the devices you want to run and how long each must operate.
- Find realistic power use. Check appliance labels and manuals. For compatible plug-in loads, a plug-in watt meter can help measure consumption; it does not establish motor startup surge.
- Calculate each load’s energy and add the results. For appliances that cycle, such as a refrigerator compressor, measured energy over time can be more useful for runtime estimates than assuming the appliance draws its nameplate running watts continuously.
- Allow for losses and variation. Delivered AC energy is lower than rated battery capacity because of inverter and internal losses, reserve capacity, and station consumption. Temperature, battery aging, and actual appliance use also affect results.
Runtime estimates vary by device and conditions. PowerOutlast illustrates one calculation using an assumed 85% efficiency: 2,000Wh × 0.85 ÷ 200W = approximately 8.5 hours. The 85% figure is an assumption in that example, not a universal efficiency rating or a measured result for every station.

Compare stations on more than battery size
Once you have an energy estimate and a load profile, compare candidate stations against the specific job. Check:
- Usable energy and runtime: Look for information about usable AC energy, not only headline battery capacity.
- Continuous and surge output: Confirm both against simultaneous running loads and startup requirements.
- Ports and voltage: Verify outlet types, port-specific limits, and voltage meet your devices’ requirements.
- Charging inputs: Check supported wall, solar, and vehicle inputs, their maximum rates, and any compatibility requirements.
- Battery documentation: Review the stated chemistry and manufacturer documentation for cycle life rather than treating cycle-life claims as interchangeable.
- Portability and storage: Account for weight, handles or wheels, and the space and conditions needed for storage.
- Expansion: If an expansion battery is supported, confirm compatibility and whether it adds energy only or also changes output. Added energy may extend runtime without increasing inverter output.
- Warranty and service: Check the terms and how support is provided in your location.
- Total system cost: Include any required panels, cables, adapters, expansion batteries, transfer equipment, and electrical work—not just the station.
Plan how you will recharge it
Charging is a system decision: the station’s input limits, the power source, and compatible cables or adapters determine what is possible. Confirm the specifications for the exact station model rather than assuming that a charging method or accessory will work.

Wall charging
Check the stated mains recharge rate and the time needed for your planned use. A fast recharge can be useful between outages or trips, but the station must support the required input and the available outlet must meet its requirements.
Solar charging
Solar can support off-grid use, but panel output varies with weather, season, orientation, and shade. A panel’s rated wattage is not a guarantee of continuous output, and the station’s maximum solar input may limit how much it can accept. Verify panel and cable compatibility, input limits, and any adapters required; include those parts in your budget.

Vehicle charging
Check the vehicle input supported by the specific model. Standard 12V vehicle charging can be slow for a large battery, so it may not suit a plan that depends on quickly replenishing substantial capacity while traveling.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) describes battery and charger hazards including overheating, fire, electric shock, thermal burns, and other injuries, with reported incidents during use, storage, and charging. It recommends protections across the battery, charger, and end-product system. CPSC staff state: “End-product systems (including cells, batteries, chargers, and product) are tested together for safe function and appropriate conditions.” This is general guidance, not a certification of any particular power station.

CPSC lists UL 2054, covering household and commercial batteries, and UL 2595, covering general requirements for battery-powered appliances, among voluntary standards. That listing does not establish which standard applies to a given power station or prove that a specific unit is certified. Check the manufacturer’s model-specific safety documentation and verify certification claims for the exact product.
A portable power station is not automatically a whole-home battery. For household circuit integration, use only a product and configuration designed to connect through compatible transfer equipment or a home power panel. Use a qualified electrician where required, and never feed power into household wiring through a standard wall outlet.
Make the final choice against your actual load
Write down the devices you need, their measured or documented running demand, how long they must operate, and any startup surge. Use that list to eliminate stations that fall short on continuous output or surge, then compare usable energy and recharge options. Finish by checking ports, portability, documented battery and safety details, warranty, compatibility, and the full cost of the setup. Brand and model examples alone are not a substitute for checking current specifications, compatibility, availability, pricing, and recall information.
