To keep home internet working during a power outage, back up power to every powered device in your connection path: the modem or gateway, router, and any separate fiber ONT. A UPS can bridge a short outage; a larger battery or generator can run equipment longer if sized for its load. Neither can fix an outage in your internet provider’s network. If that network is down, a phone or portable hotspot—or an eligible ISP cellular-failover service—may provide another connection when cellular coverage is available.

Will your internet still work if the power goes out?

It can, but only if the equipment in your home stays powered and your provider’s network remains operational. Cable and fiber equipment generally needs electricity; a fiber setup may include a separate optical network terminal (ONT) in addition to the router or gateway. The FCC’s 2015 order discusses backup power for fixed residential voice and 911 service, not a guarantee that broadband will remain available during every outage: FCC Order 15-98.

That creates two distinct failure points: loss of power to your home equipment, and loss of service farther upstream. A battery can address the first. It cannot restore a damaged or unpowered provider network. Check your utility and ISP outage information using mobile data if available; AT&T’s outage guidance also recommends checking both: AT&T outage information.

How do I keep my Wi-Fi on when the power goes out?

1. Identify every device in the connection path

Trace the cable or fiber entering your home. Your setup may have a modem and separate router, a combined gateway, or a fiber ONT plus a router or gateway. Keep each powered device running. A backup battery connected only to the router will not help if the modem or ONT loses power.

2. Use a UPS for a short interruption

A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) switches to battery automatically when utility power fails, so it is a straightforward option for a brief interruption. Connect the modem or gateway, router, and separate ONT as needed. Check the devices’ power requirements and the UPS manufacturer’s load and runtime information; actual runtime depends on battery capacity and the equipment’s draw. AT&T notes that some small UPS units may keep equipment running for only a few minutes: AT&T’s power-outage internet guide. Test your setup before an outage rather than assuming the advertised runtime applies to your equipment.

3. Plan larger backup power for longer outages

A larger battery or inverter, or a generator, can support networking equipment for longer, but runtime depends on capacity and load. Check the equipment labels and the backup system’s specifications, and plan how you will recharge batteries or supply generator fuel. Do not rely on a runtime estimate unless it applies to your actual connected load.

What if the provider’s network is down?

If your home equipment has power but your ISP reports a network outage, switch to a cellular connection if service is available. You can use a phone hotspot for a few devices or a dedicated portable hotspot for multiple devices. Either option depends on cellular coverage, a compatible plan and data allowance, and charged hardware. Limit streaming and other high-data activities when using a phone plan with a data cap.

Check what a provider’s backup battery actually powers

A provider-supplied battery may preserve only some services. For example, Verizon says its Fios PowerReserve supports basic voice and 911 service—not Fios Internet or TV. For compatible ONT equipment, Verizon states at least 24 hours of backup with 12 fresh D-cell batteries. That is a service-specific claim, not an internet-backup recommendation: Verizon Fios PowerReserve.
