Neither cloud nor local storage is automatically safer or better for every security camera. Cloud recording can make clips easier to retrieve remotely and may preserve them if the camera is stolen or damaged. Local recording can reduce subscription dependence and keep the storage device under your control. The right choice depends on the camera’s supported features, how you need to record and retrieve footage, and whether you can protect and maintain the whole system.
How cloud and local camera storage differ
Cloud storage sends recordings to a provider’s remote service. Local storage saves them on equipment at the property, such as a compatible microSD card or network video recorder (NVR). Some cameras support more than one method, but options vary by model and region.
The storage location is only one part of the security model. A camera’s account, app, network connection, firmware, permissions, and service provider can all affect who can access footage. Local recordings can still be exposed through an insecure camera or remote-access setup; cloud recordings add a provider and account to consider.
Cloud vs. local storage at a glance
| Decision | Cloud recording | Local recording |
|---|---|---|
| Where footage is stored | On a provider’s systems. Check the storage location, access rules, retention, deletion process, and provider controls. | On a supported card, NVR, or other on-site recorder. Physical access and upkeep are the owner’s responsibility. |
| Retrieving footage | Can provide remote access to saved clips, subject to account and service availability. | Footage is saved to local equipment. Remote retrieval may require additional configuration. |
| What can put recordings at risk | Account compromise, provider or service problems, and camera or network vulnerabilities. | Device theft or damage, storage failure or capacity limits, misconfiguration, and camera or network vulnerabilities. |
| Costs and upkeep | May require recurring plan fees. Plan features and recording modes vary. | May require a compatible card, recorder, and enough storage capacity. The owner manages equipment and maintenance. |
| Typical scale | Depends on the camera and plan; verify support for event clips or continuous recording. | A card may suit one camera; an NVR may centralize multiple cameras, if the equipment is compatible. |
When cloud storage may suit you
Cloud recording may be useful when you want to review clips away from home or preserve recordings somewhere other than the camera itself. If the camera or its local card is stolen or damaged, remotely stored footage may still be available, provided your account and the service remain accessible.

That convenience comes with an additional trust and access relationship. CISA’s 2025 small-business supply-chain example notes that surveillance footage may be stored in a public cloud and that customers rely on the vendor’s security measures. Before choosing a service, check where footage is stored, who can access it, how long it is retained, how you can delete it, and what happens if the account is unavailable or the plan ends.
When local storage may suit you
Local recording may appeal if you want to avoid some cloud-plan costs or keep the recording device physically under your control. A compatible microSD card can store footage in a camera; an NVR can provide centralized recording for multiple compatible cameras. Neither option is universal: check the exact camera’s manual for supported storage type, card capacity, format, speed, and recording modes.

Local storage also makes you responsible for the recording equipment. A card or recorder can be stolen, damaged, misconfigured, or filled to capacity. Decide how much footage you need to retain, protect the recorder physically, and consider whether you need a separate backup. A local device does not prevent exposure if the camera or its remote-access path is poorly secured.
Can a security camera record without a subscription?
Sometimes. Reolink says cloud subscriptions are optional for recording on supported devices and describes microSD and FTP as alternatives, while noting that cloud availability varies by model and region. This is a manufacturer-specific example, not a guarantee about other brands or every Reolink camera. Check the current support page and manual for your exact model before buying equipment or assuming a recording feature is included.

What happens to footage if the internet goes out?
There is no universal answer: it depends on the camera, storage method, and how recording is configured. A camera saving footage to local storage may be able to record on-site during an internet outage, but confirm this in the model’s documentation. Cloud recording depends on the camera being able to send footage to the service; remote access also depends on the connection and service being available. Test the behavior of your setup rather than assuming a camera records through an outage.
How to compare systems before choosing
- Confirm the recording modes. Check whether the exact model supports local storage, cloud storage, or both, and whether it records continuously, on events, or in clips. Verify the plan as well as the camera specifications.
- Set your retention needs. Decide how long footage needs to remain available and check whether capacity, plan limits, or recording settings meet that need. Do not assume retention is the same across cameras or services.
- Review access and privacy controls. Ask whether footage is encrypted in transit and at rest, whether two-factor authentication and distinct user permissions are available, who can view or administer the feed, and whether remote viewing can be disabled. Verify these features for the product you are considering.
- Plan for loss of access. Find out what happens to saved footage during an internet outage, account lockout, service interruption, or subscription cancellation. For local equipment, account for theft, damage, and storage filling up.
- Compare total costs and work. Consider plan fees over your intended ownership period as well as compatible storage hardware, capacity, maintenance, firmware updates, and any backup. Neither storage method is established as universally cheaper.
Secure the camera whichever storage you choose
The Federal Trade Commission recommends using strong, unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication for cloud accounts when available, installing software updates, using encryption where offered, and taking care when enabling remote viewing. Limit access to people who need it and review who can watch or administer the feed.

The FTC’s consumer guidance, How To Secure Your Home Security Cameras, says: “If your camera stores your videos in the cloud, it should already require you to set up a password for your cloud account.” A password is one safeguard, not a substitute for checking account protections, permissions, updates, and provider practices.
Security incidents also show why vendor practices matter. In an August 30, 2024, press release, the FTC described allegations that inadequate security practices exposed sensitive video and customer data in the Verkada case. The FTC said the complaint alleged that a March 2021 breach gave a hacker access to over 150,000 live customer cameras. That figure concerns allegations in one case; it is not an estimate of the general risk for security cameras.
