PS5 plays the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, but it does not play PS3 game discs. Compatible PS4 digital games can be downloaded from your PlayStation library; compatible PS4 discs work only on a PS5 model with a disc drive. A small number of PS4 games are exceptions, so check a specific title before relying on it.
Which PS4 games work on PS5?
Sony says the PS5 can play the overwhelming majority of the more than 4,000 games available on PS4. That is a broad compatibility statement, not a guarantee that every title works or behaves exactly as it did on PS4. Sony does not give a current exact count of compatible games on its PS4-to-PS5 compatibility page.
Sony identifies these PS4 games as playable only on PS4:
- Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One
- Just Deal With It!
- Robinson: The Journey
- We Sing
- Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
- Shadwen
Sony notes that this list may change. It excludes demos, media, and non-game applications, so check the current PlayStation Store label or compatibility page for the title you want.

Can PS5 play PS3 games?
PS5 consoles do not support PS3 game discs. A related exception to watch for: if a PS4 digital upgrade still requires the original PS3 disc, that upgrade will not work on PS5 either. Backward compatibility here means PS4 games on PS5, not general support for every older PlayStation generation. Sony’s US Games Support page also states the PS3-disc limitation.
How to play a PS4 game on PS5
Use a PS4 disc
- Check that the game is compatible and that your PS5 has a disc drive. PS4 discs cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition.
- Insert the disc. Install an update if prompted, and leave the disc in the console whenever you play; it serves as the license.
Download a digital PS4 game
- Sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Open your game library on PS5, select the compatible PS4 title, and download it if it is not already installed.
Digital access depends on owning the game on the account you use and on the specific title being compatible. If you are choosing a console mainly to use your existing PS4 discs, you need a PS5 model with a disc drive; digital purchases can be downloaded from your library on either model.

Does a PS4 game run like a PS5 game?
No. A PS4 game running through backward compatibility remains the PS4 version; it is not automatically the separate native PS5 edition. Some PS4 games can benefit from PS5 Game Boost and run at higher or smoother frame rates, but improvements are title-dependent, not guaranteed. Some PS4 functions may be unavailable, and Sony warns that certain games may show errors or unexpected behavior.
Some titles offer a separate PS5 upgrade, but availability and terms vary: an upgrade may be free, paid, or time-limited. Check the individual game’s Store listing and publisher information rather than assuming an upgrade is included. Sony described those variations in its October 2020 PS4-on-PS5 FAQ.

What about PS4 saves, controllers, and PS VR?
Saves and game data
Sony describes transferring PS4 data to PS5 over Wi-Fi or with compatible USB storage. Its 2020 FAQ also describes LAN transfer and PlayStation Plus cloud saves. Moving a save from a PS4 edition into a separate PS5 edition is a different matter: the developer decides whether and how that works for each game.
Controllers and accessories
Both DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers work with supported PS4 games on PS5. For PS VR, Sony specifies the original PS VR headset, a PS4 Camera, and the Camera adaptor. The PS5 HD Camera does not work for PS VR.

What Sony’s compatibility numbers mean
In an October 9, 2020 launch-period statement, Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Hideaki Nishino said that more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games would be playable on PS5 at launch. That was a launch-era forecast, not a current measurement. Sony’s current support page instead describes the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games as playable and does not publish an exact current compatible-game count.
Storefront details and account guidance can differ by region. For a particular game, use the current PlayStation support page and Store for your region; the compatibility guidance linked above is Sony’s UK support page.
