To play a PS3 game on PS5, check whether it is currently available to stream through the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog in your region. Sony describes classic PS3 catalog games as streaming-only; a PS3 disc itself requires a PS3 console.
Which ways to play PS3 games on PS5 actually work?
| Your situation | What to do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| You want to use a PS3 disc on PS5 | There is no supported PS5 disc-playback route. | Sony says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. A disc drive or disc accessory does not change that. Sony PS5 backward compatibility support |
| You want to play a PS3 title on PS5 without its disc | Search the current Classics Catalog for the title and, if available, stream it with the required membership. | Only selected PS3 games are offered, availability depends on region and can change, and Sony says classic PS3 catalog games are streaming-only. Sony Classics Catalog FAQ |
| You own the PS3 disc and want to play that copy | Use a PS3 console designed to play PS3-format software. | This is a separate console option; it does not make the disc playable on PS5. The cited PS3 manual describes the referenced model as designed to play PS3-format software. Sony PS3 system manuals |
How to stream an available PS3 game on PS5
Sony’s US guidance associates Classics Catalog access and cloud streaming with PlayStation Plus Premium. Plan names and benefits can differ by market, so check the membership offered in your country. A title must also appear in your local catalog; membership does not make every PS3 game available.
- From the PS5 Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Go to Benefits, then choose Classics Catalog.
- Find the specific game in the catalog. Check that it is available in your region and select it.
- Choose Stream to start the game. Sony’s instructions specify a broadband connection of at least 5 Mbps for Classics Catalog streaming. Sony streaming support
Sony lists 15 Mbps as the minimum for streaming a supported game in 1080p. That is a published minimum, not a guarantee of uninterrupted play: actual results can depend on the connection and network conditions. Some catalog titles may also have an end date and later leave PlayStation Plus.
Can you download PS3 games from the Classics Catalog?
No. Sony distinguishes downloadable catalog games from classic PS3 catalog games, which it identifies as streaming-only. The download option is not a workaround for a PS3 disc that the PS5 cannot read. Check the game’s current listing rather than assuming that a title is downloadable or included. PS3 controls when streaming on PS5
Some PS3 games use the original controller’s SELECT and START commands. For streamed PS3 games, Sony maps these to clicks on the DualSense touchpad:
- SELECT: click the left side of the touchpad.
- START: click the right side of the touchpad.
Click the touchpad; simply touching or tapping it will not register those commands. Sony streaming support

What features are unavailable during a streamed session?
Sony lists several features and accessories as unsupported while streaming a game. Do not rely on the following during a streamed PS3 session:
- Broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, or Remote Play
- Mouse or keyboard
- PSVR, PS Camera, or HD Camera
- Third-party controllers
These are limitations of the streaming session, not ways to improve disc compatibility. Sony streaming support

What to check if your PS3 game is not available
- Search the local catalog: the reviewed Sony guidance is US-facing, and the available games can vary by region.
- Confirm the membership benefits in your country: Sony’s US pages associate Classics Catalog and cloud streaming with Premium, but local plan names and benefits may differ.
- Check availability again later: catalogs can change, and Sony notes that some games have removal dates.
- If you need to use your physical disc: play it on a PS3 console; PS5 has no supported PS3-disc playback path.
Sony’s US catalog and support pages checked for this guide were current as of October 7, 2026; they do not establish a complete region-by-region list of PS3 games. Check your local PlayStation Plus catalog for current title availability. Sony Classics Catalog FAQ Sony PlayStation Plus plan benefits
