You cannot play a PS3 disc on a PS5. Some original PS3 games are playable on PS5 through cloud streaming with PlayStation Plus Premium in supported markets, if the specific game is currently offered. A PS3 remake or remaster for PS4 or PS5 is a separate release that can be downloaded; it is not the original PS3 game running natively.
Can you play PS3 games on PS5?
Not from an original PS3 disc. Sony’s backward-compatibility guidance states: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” See PlayStation Support’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance.
There are two other ways a PS3-era game may be playable on PS5: stream the original PS3 game if Sony offers it in the local catalog, or download a separately released PS4/PS5 remake or remaster. Those options do not make the PS5 compatible with PS3 discs.
Why does Sony use streaming for some original PS3 games?
To run an original PS3 game locally, a console would need to execute that software while reproducing the platform behavior the game expects. Sony’s materials identify the PS3’s Cell processor and RSX graphics processor as parts of its hardware design (Cell overview; PS3 launch announcement). An emulation developer’s technical explanation describes why reproducing PS3 behavior on later, differently structured processors is challenging (Digital Trends’ discussion of PS3 emulation).

- Vertical Stand sold seperately
That technical context helps explain why local execution is not straightforward, but it does not establish Sony’s definitive reason for choosing streaming. Sony’s public support and subscription materials describe what the PS5 and service offer; they do not give a single engineering or business rationale for the policy. It also does not mean PS3 emulation is impossible.
How the three ways to play differ
| Route | What happens | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS3 disc | Run the disc locally on PS5 | Unsupported: PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs, according to Sony’s support page. |
| Original PS3 game by streaming | Play an eligible original game streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium | The game must be in the current catalog, and cloud streaming must be available for your market and plan. See Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide and cloud-streaming details. |
| PS4/PS5 remake or remaster | Download a separate version made for a later platform | Check the listing for the exact edition and platform. Sony distinguishes downloadable remakes or remasters from original PS3 games offered for streaming in its PlayStation Plus guide. |
How to check whether a specific game is playable
- Identify the version. Check whether you have a PS3 disc, are looking for the original PS3 game, or want a PS4/PS5 remake or remaster. A later-platform release is a different version from the PS3 original.
- Check the current local PlayStation Store or game catalog. Look up the exact title and edition in your region. Streaming eligibility is selective, so the presence of one PS3 game does not mean the whole PS3 library is available.
- Confirm the access method and subscription requirements. Sony lists original PS3 titles among games streamed with PlayStation Plus Premium in select markets. Check the title’s current listing and Sony’s supported-region and cloud-streaming information before subscribing or expecting to play.
Why one PS3 game may be downloadable while another streams
Store listings can refer to different software. A PS4/PS5 remaster or remake is a later-platform release and may be downloaded. An original PS3 version offered through the subscription catalog is streamed. The original disc remains unsupported on PS5 in either case.
