Choose a Windows laptop if you need Windows desktop software, particular hardware or peripheral compatibility, or a conventional PC workflow. Phone Link connects Android phones to Windows, but its app features are limited to supported device combinations; it does not give every Windows laptop universal local Android-app support.
Your phone brand alone cannot decide this. Check the laptop model, phone, required apps, account setup, and any work or school restrictions before buying.
How to choose between a Chromebook and a Windows laptop
Start with what you need to do on the laptop, not simply which phone you own. A Chromebook can run Android apps locally through Google Play on supported models. Windows Phone Link can show selected apps from a connected Android phone on eligible combinations, alongside phone features such as messages and notifications.
| Decision | Chromebook | Windows laptop | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run Android apps on the laptop | Google Play is available on some Chromebook models; individual apps may be unavailable or may not work correctly. | Phone Link can provide access to apps from a connected phone on selected combinations. This is not universal local installation of Android apps in Windows. | Exact laptop and phone models, operating-system versions, and required apps. |
| Connect with your phone | Google documents notifications, photos, text messages, phone-network connection, and phone-based unlocking. Phone Hub adds controls and, on select combinations, app streaming. | Phone Link can provide messages, photos, calls, notifications, and selected app experiences. | Whether your phone is supported and whether both devices meet the feature requirements. |
| Share nearby files | Quick Share works with compatible Android and Chromebook devices. | Google also documents Quick Share for compatible Windows PCs, so it is not exclusive to Chromebooks. | Device and OS compatibility; Quick Share is off by default on Chromebooks. |
| Keep the device updated | Automatic update end dates depend on the Chromebook model. Some extended-update choices remove Play Store and Android-app access. | The sources cited here do not compare Windows servicing or individual laptop-vendor driver support. | Check the Chromebook’s model-specific update date, or the Windows edition and vendor support details for the specific PC. |
| Use desktop software and peripherals | Chromebooks combine web and Android apps; suitability depends on the task and app. | A better fit when a required Windows program, peripheral, or established PC workflow determines the choice. | List must-have software and peripherals before choosing. |
When a Chromebook is the better fit
You want Android apps on the laptop itself
On supported Chromebooks, you can install Android apps from Google Play. But support varies by model and app: Google says Play Store access is available on only some Chromebooks, apps do not automatically transfer from your phone, and some apps are unavailable or do not work on some devices. Verify the exact model and every essential app before purchase. Google’s Chromebook Android-app guidance explains availability and installation.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
You want everyday phone continuity
Google lists chat notifications, photos, text messages, a connection to the phone’s network, and phone-based Chromebook unlocking among the features available when connecting an Android phone. Its stated minimums for this general connection are ChromeOS version 71 or later and Android version 6 or later. Work or school management can restrict the features. See Google’s phone connection guidance.
Phone Hub offers additional phone status and commands, Chrome tabs from the phone, notification controls, recent photos and screenshots, and app streaming on eligible combinations. Google’s general Phone Hub requirements are ChromeOS M89 or later and Android 5.1 or later. App streaming is more restricted: the cited guidance names Pixel 4a or later on Android 13 or later, Nothing Phone (1) and (2), and selected Xiaomi models on Android 13 or later. Streaming also requires the devices to be nearby and on the same Wi-Fi network; some networks may not work. Confirm current compatibility on Google’s Phone Hub page before relying on streaming.

You have checked the update horizon
Google says Chromebook models released in 2021 or later receive 10 years of updates, but you should check the exact model’s “Update schedule” for its automatic update end date. Dates for older models vary. Google also warns that opting into extended updates on some devices removes Android apps and Google Play access. Check Google’s guidance on old Chromebooks and updates before buying or accepting an extended-update option.
When a Windows laptop is the better fit
You depend on Windows programs or peripherals
Phone Link does not replace Windows desktop programs. If a required application or peripheral makes Windows necessary, choose the Windows laptop and check its compatibility directly. The phone connection is an added convenience, not a substitute for the PC workflow you need.

Your phone supports the Phone Link features you want
Microsoft lists messages, recent photos, calls, notifications, and favorite mobile apps among Phone Link’s possible capabilities. Its stated requirements are a PC running Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11, and an Android device running Android 10 or later; both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network. The phone must also be supported and use Link to Windows. Having Windows 11 does not guarantee every feature. Multiple Android profiles and work or school accounts are not supported by Phone Link. Check Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup.
App access requires a supported Link to Windows configuration and the same Wi-Fi connection. Using multiple apps simultaneously has additional Android and Windows requirements; Microsoft recommends at least 8 GB of RAM for best performance. Check the eligible devices and current conditions on Microsoft’s Phone Link Apps setup page and supported-device information before counting on an app feature.

Is Quick Share a reason to buy a Chromebook?
Not by itself. Quick Share can transfer files, images, text, or web pages between nearby compatible devices. Google states requirements of ChromeOS 91 or later and Android 6 or later, and notes that Quick Share is off by default on Chromebooks. Its guidance also includes compatible Windows PCs, so compare support on the devices you already own rather than treating file sharing as a Chromebook-only advantage. See Google’s Quick Share guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check these details before buying
- If considering a Chromebook: Confirm the exact model has Google Play access, each required Android app works on it, and its model-specific automatic update end date is acceptable.
- If considering Windows: Confirm your Android phone is supported by Phone Link, then check the requirements for the specific features you expect—especially app access and using multiple apps.
- If file sharing is your main need: Check Quick Share support for both devices; it may work with a compatible Windows PC as well as a Chromebook.
- For either choice: List required desktop programs, peripherals, and account constraints. Work or school management can affect phone integration.
There is no evidence here establishing a general winner for speed, battery life, or price. Those comparisons depend on the specific laptops and are separate from Android integration.
