For playing PS3 classics on a PS5, PlayStation Plus Premium is the documented route: eligible PS3 games in Sony’s Classics Catalog are streamed, not downloaded as PS3 software. A separate purchase is an alternative only when that specific game has a supported PS5 edition available in your region. Premium makes more sense if you want several catalog games, can rely on streaming, and will use its other benefits; buying a supported edition may suit you better if you want one particular game and local play.
How PS3 classics work on PS5
Sony describes PS3 games in the Classics Catalog as “available via streaming only.” In practice, you select an eligible title on PS5 and stream it through the service; you do not download and install its PS3 version on the console. Sony’s PS5 Classics Catalog support guide gives the access steps.
That distinction matters when comparing a subscription with a purchase. Owning a PS3 disc or a PS3 Store purchase does not, by itself, establish that you can play that PS3 version on PS5. A purchase is relevant to this decision only if the game has a separately supported PS5 edition or other current PS5 purchase option in your account region.
What each option actually gets you
| Consideration | PS Plus Premium | Buying a game |
|---|---|---|
| Access to PS3 games on PS5 | Eligible PS3 titles in the Classics Catalog are streamed. The catalog is not every PS3 game. | Only a supported PS5 purchase edition is a practical alternative for PS5; a PS3 disc or PS3 version should not be assumed to work. |
| Availability | Depends on the current catalog and your account region; titles can change. | Depends on whether the specific supported edition is currently sold in your region. |
| Connection | Requires streaming. Sony’s US support guide sets a 5 Mbps broadband minimum and says 15 Mbps is needed for 1080p when supported. | A supported local-play edition avoids streaming dependence, though its own download and game requirements still apply. |
| Access terms | Access is under membership and catalog terms, not ownership of a standalone game. | A purchase is tied to the edition and terms shown for that specific listing. |
| Cost comparison | Compare the current local Premium price over the period you plan to subscribe, including other benefits only if you will use them. | Compare the current local price of the exact supported PS5 edition. |
When Premium is the better fit
- You want to play more than one PS3 classic that is currently in your region’s Classics Catalog.
- You are comfortable streaming rather than installing the PS3 version locally.
- You have a reliable broadband connection and tolerate the possibility of a queue or streaming variation.
- You will also use Premium’s other benefits. Sony lists the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming among Premium benefits in its PlayStation Plus support plan comparison.
Streaming can also remove the need to download the game itself, but Sony notes that queues may occur. While streaming, broadcasting, Share Play, and Remote Play are unavailable. Sony says Game Mode on a compatible TV may improve the experience. These are meaningful trade-offs if you regularly use those console features or are sensitive to interruptions.

When buying a game is the better fit
- You have one specific classic in mind and its supported PS5 edition is currently available to buy in your region.
- You prefer local play and want to avoid streaming-dependent access.
- You expect to return to that one game over a longer period, and its purchase price compares favorably with the subscription time you would otherwise need.
Do not compare Premium with an assumed ability to buy “the PS3 version” for PS5. Check the listing for the exact game and edition; a PS3 listing, disc, or old purchase is not proof of PS5 compatibility.
How to decide for your account and region
- Find the exact title in the current Classics Catalog. Check the catalog while signed in with the account region you use on PS5. Sony’s PlayStation Plus games catalog identifies the catalog and notes that PS3 Classics are streaming-only.
- Check for a separate supported PS5 edition. Search the local PlayStation Store listing for the specific game and confirm the edition is for PS5 or otherwise explicitly supported on PS5. Do not infer compatibility from a PS3 version.
- Check whether cloud streaming is available where you live. Sony’s Cloud streaming on PS5 page lists supported countries and explains eligibility. Availability and catalog selections can change.
- Compare current local costs over your intended play period. Use the Premium price and billing terms shown in your PlayStation Store and the price of the exact supported game edition. There is no universal break-even count: it depends on your region, subscription duration, current prices, and how much you value the other included benefits.
- Assess your connection and feature needs. Sony’s US guide requires at least 5 Mbps broadband; it specifies 15 Mbps for 1080p where the game supports it. Those are service thresholds, not a promise of consistent quality. Consider your household connection, latency tolerance, possible queues, and the streaming restrictions before subscribing.
How to start streaming a PS3 classic on PS5
- On the PS5 home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Open the Classics Catalog and choose an eligible game.
- Select Stream on the game page.
If a title is absent, it may not be available in your catalog or region; absence does not mean you can install its PS3 version instead. Sony’s support guide describes the eligible-game flow and current streaming details.

Verdict
Choose Premium if the PS3 games you want are currently in your regional Classics Catalog and streaming suits you—especially if you will use more than one title or other Premium benefits. Choose a separate purchase only when the exact game has a supported PS5 edition available and you prefer that edition’s access terms or local-play experience. Without a named game and region, neither option has a defensible universal price advantage.
