Choose a battery-powered model if there is no suitable wiring or you want to avoid connecting the doorbell to it. Before deciding, check the exact model’s power requirements, indoor-chime behavior, and video-history limits: “wired” and “battery-powered” do not guarantee the same features across brands.

Check your wiring before choosing a wired model
Do not assume that an existing doorbell transformer is suitable just because a wired doorbell is already installed. The required voltage and transformer capacity depend on the doorbell model, generation, and region. Google’s compatibility page, for example, lists the Nest Doorbell (battery) at 8–24 V AC and gives different requirements for its wired models, including 16–24 V AC for the North American wired models shown. Those figures apply to the specified Google models, not to video doorbells generally. Check Google’s model-by-model compatibility details.
If your existing system does not meet the selected wired model’s requirements, the manufacturer may call for a transformer upgrade or another installation option. Confirm the exact doorbell’s voltage and VA requirements, the transformer’s capacity, and any chime requirements before buying. If you are unsure about the household wiring or installation, consult a qualified installer.
What changes when a battery doorbell is connected to wires?
“Hardwired” can describe how a particular battery-capable doorbell is powered or installed; it does not necessarily mean the device becomes equivalent to a wired-only model. Google says the Nest Doorbell (battery) can run on its internal battery or connect to doorbell wires for continuous charging, but it still cannot continuously record 24/7 video history. Its existing wired-chime behavior is also different from what some buyers may expect. Google’s compatibility guidance and product specifications explain these limits.

Other models handle wired installation differently. Arlo describes its Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) as supporting rechargeable-battery or wired installation, with wiring used for continuous power. For the specific Essential Wire-Free model, Arlo says hardwiring can also allow an existing chime to ring. These are examples for those models, not a guarantee that any battery doorbell gains the same features when wired. Arlo’s product page and Essential Wire-Free FAQ give the model details.
Decide whether you need the existing indoor chime
If hearing the doorbell through an existing indoor chime matters, verify the behavior for the exact model and installation mode before purchase. A battery doorbell may notify a phone or use a compatible accessory without ringing the old chime; another battery-capable model may support the existing chime when hardwired. The Google Nest Doorbell (battery) and Arlo Essential Wire-Free examples above demonstrate why category labels are not enough.

When an adapter or transformer is part of the plan
An indoor power adapter may be an option for some installations, but it is not a universal workaround for incompatible wiring. Google says its Nest indoor adapter is sold separately where available, is intended for indoor use, and is not weatherproof; do not plug it into an outdoor outlet. Match the adapter and any transformer to the exact doorbell and region rather than substituting a generic accessory. Google’s indoor-adapter instructions cover its use and limitations.

- Choose wired if compatible wiring is already present, you want to avoid charging a battery, and the model supports the chime and recording features you need.
- Choose battery-powered if there is no suitable wiring or avoiding a wiring project is more important than charging convenience or particular wired-system features.
- Consider a model that supports both if you want installation flexibility, but confirm what connecting wires actually changes: charging, chime operation, and recording can have separate rules.
There is no general winner for image quality, speed, or reliability established by the manufacturer documentation cited here. Compare those specifications and features for the individual models you are considering, rather than inferring them from the power source.
