One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFirst check which version of the game your PS5 is running. A PS4 game played through backward compatibility is not the same as a native PS5 version or a PS5 upgrade. For the PS4 version, Game Boost is automatic and may improve or stabilize performance in select games, but compatibility alone does not guarantee a visible improvement.
Check which version of the game is running
Open the game from your PS5 Game Library or game hub and check the selected version. If both PS4 and PS5 versions are available, make sure you know which one is installed and launched before judging performance. Sony documents how to switch versions in its backward-compatibility guidance.
A native PS5 release or upgrade is a separate game build: its features and performance do not show what the PS4 version gains from running on PS5. Upgrade eligibility and terms vary by title and edition, so check the game’s Store listing for whether an upgrade is available and whether it is free or paid.
Sony says the PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, while noting that some titles are PS4-only and some may show errors or unexpected behavior. “Playable on PS5” describes compatibility, not a performance guarantee. Sony recommends trying a PS4 game on the console before buying add-ons for it.

Look for evidence about that specific game
Check the PlayStation Store listing and the publisher’s current support page or patch notes. Look for information that names the platform or build and describes a PS5 upgrade, unlocked frame rate, resolution change, or PS4 Pro patch. Record the game version and platform identified in the note; a general statement about PS5 backward compatibility is not a benchmark for a particular title.
Sony’s official overview says its catalogue includes more than 4,000 PS4 games, but the cited pages do not provide a complete title-by-title performance table. Avoid claiming a specific frame-rate, resolution, or loading improvement unless a reliable game-specific source supports it.

What Game Boost does—and does not do
For a PS4 version running on PS5, Game Boost works automatically; there is no PS4 Pro-style Boost Mode switch to enable on PS5. Sony says select games may run at a higher or smoother frame rate. Some may load faster or show higher fidelity, but the result depends on the game and is not guaranteed for every title. See Sony’s PlayStation ecosystem overview.
Existing PS4 Pro enhancements supported by a game can also carry into the PS5 gameplay experience. That is distinct from Game Boost itself and from running a native PS5 build. Do not attribute an improvement to backward compatibility until you have confirmed which build you are playing.

PS5 Pro: check its separate PS4 image-quality option
PS5 Pro has an optional setting called Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games. It is separate from Game Boost and applies to PS4 games on consoles in model group CFI-7000. Sony says it requires a display that supports 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz.
- On the PS5 Pro, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Select Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games.
- If gameplay behaves unexpectedly, turn the setting off, as Sony advises.
For Sony’s instructions and requirements, see How to enhance image quality for PS4 games on PS5 Pro consoles.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Find games marked PS5 Pro Enhanced
On PS5 Pro, open the PlayStation Store, go to Collections > PS5 Pro Enhanced, or search for “PS5 Pro.” The designation is a discovery aid for games identified by Sony as Pro Enhanced; it is not a complete list of PS4 games that might benefit from ordinary PS5 Game Boost.

If you are checking a game yourself or reporting a comparison, keep the versions and conditions consistent. Compare the same game build and, where possible, the same scene or activity. Separate frame rate, image resolution or quality, and loading time instead of treating “runs better” as a single measurement.

- Claim that a frame rate is capped or unlocked only when a reliable, title-specific source confirms it.
- Name the source and date for any patch note or published benchmark you rely on.
Sony’s cited guidance does not prescribe a benchmark protocol. A comparison should therefore identify its own method and should not be presented as Sony-validated unless Sony actually validated it.
