You can reduce the risk of unwanted viewing by securing your camera account and home network, keeping software current, limiting remote access, and reviewing who has permission to view footage. These steps protect the route into your camera; they do not establish how a vendor handles video after it reaches the vendor’s systems.

Secure the account that controls the camera

A camera account with a reused or default password can expose both live viewing and stored recordings. Start with the account used by the camera’s companion app or cloud service.

  1. Replace default credentials. Change any default username or password. Use a unique, strong password that you do not use for another service.
  2. Enable two-factor authentication. Turn it on for the camera’s cloud account if the vendor offers it.
  3. Review account activity. Check access logs for unfamiliar addresses or unusual access times. Remove accounts and permissions you no longer need.

The FTC’s camera security guidance recommends these account protections. An unfamiliar log entry warrants investigation, but a log without an obvious anomaly does not prove that footage has never been accessed improperly.

Protect the network the camera uses

A camera connected to your home Wi-Fi depends on the security of the router as well as the camera account. Update the router, use the Wi-Fi encryption option available on it, and consider placing cameras on a separate network from computers and phones. The FTC recommends these measures in its guidance on securing home security cameras.

Tapo 1080P Indoor Security Camera, Baby Monitor, Dog Camera, Wired, C100
  • ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
  • EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
  • PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
  • VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
  • FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.

Network separation can limit how much of your home network a compromised camera can reach. It does not prevent someone who has valid camera-account access—or a vendor with access to stored footage—from viewing video.

Keep the camera and app updated

Install firmware updates for the camera and updates for its companion app when they become available. Updates may address security issues, so do not assume that the camera is protected simply because it worked securely when first installed. Use the manufacturer’s current app or support channel to check for updates, and follow the model-specific instructions.

Choose cameras with controls you can verify

Before buying, check the exact model’s current manual or support pages rather than relying on a general product claim. The FTC recommends researching encryption for account information, livestreams, and archived videos, and considering whether remote viewing can be disabled. Also check whether the product supports ongoing updates and how those updates are delivered.

  • Encryption: Does the vendor document protection for account information, live video, and stored recordings?
  • Remote access: Can you disable remote viewing, and can access be restricted to trusted devices?
  • Permissions: Can the camera distinguish administrators from viewers or limit access by person or time?
  • Updates: Does the manufacturer provide updates through a current app or support channel?
  • Footage handling: What does the vendor disclose about employee access, retention, sharing, deletion, and use of recordings?

If you view the camera through a browser, check that HTTPS appears on both the login page and the page displaying the feed, as the FTC advises. HTTPS helps protect the connection between your browser and the service; it does not by itself answer how the vendor handles video on its systems.

Limit who can view the feed—and when

Give access only to people who need it. Where the camera supports distinct roles, reserve administrator permissions for the person who manages the device and give other users viewer access. Remove access when a person no longer needs it, and use time-based permissions if the product offers them.

Account security does not settle vendor privacy

Securing a password and network reduces certain risks, but it cannot establish what happens to footage after it reaches a vendor’s systems. Read the vendor’s disclosures about retention, employee access, sharing, and deletion as separate questions from whether your account is secure.

The FTC’s account of its case against Ring describes employees spying on customers through cameras, including cameras in bedrooms and bathrooms, and videos being vulnerable to attackers. The agency said hackers took control of accounts and cameras and used two-way functions to harass people. The settlement required Ring to establish a privacy and security program, delete videos it should not possess, and pay affected customers, according to the FTC’s consumer alert on the case. This is an account of the FTC’s case against Ring, not evidence that every camera vendor behaves the same way.

In August 2025, a later round of refunds stemming from the Ring settlement resulted in more than $5.4 million in refunds, according to the FTC’s Ring refunds page. That is a case-related refund amount, not a measure of how common camera hacking is.
