Charge it, set it up in the manufacturer’s app, check Wi-Fi signal at the intended mounting spot, then secure its mounting plate and attach the doorbell. Adapter and wiring options depend on the exact model.
Choose an installation method
Battery-powered, wire-free installation
This is the most direct option when there are no doorbell wires at the door. Use a model expressly designed to work without wiring. Rechargeable models need periodic charging; the interval depends on the model and use, so check its documentation rather than relying on a general estimate.
Google’s Nest Doorbell (battery) installation instructions describe charging the device, adding it in the Google Home app, checking Wi-Fi where it will be mounted, and then fastening the mounting plate and attaching the doorbell. Other brands may use different apps, hardware, or mounting steps.
Manufacturer-supported indoor power adapter
Some doorbells support a plug-in indoor adapter. This is a model-specific option, not a universal substitute for doorbell wiring. Google’s instructions for its adapter say to use an indoor outlet, not an outdoor outlet; follow the chosen model’s exact adapter instructions: Install Nest doorbell with an indoor power adapter.

Compatible wiring elsewhere in the home
A door may have no wires at the mounting location even though compatible doorbell wiring is available elsewhere. Check the actual wiring and the doorbell’s specifications before connecting anything. Google says the Nest Doorbell (battery) can use existing wiring for chime operation and recharging, subject to its stated transformer requirements. Ring also describes a trickle charge for supported battery models connected to compatible power. These details do not establish compatibility for other models.
Adding wiring for a wired-only doorbell
A wired-only model is not a wire-free solution: it needs compatible wiring and transformer arrangements. Google recommends using a local electrician to service a transformer when it needs to be made compatible. Do not assume that a transformer or wire is suitable just because it is present. Install a wire-free battery doorbell
- Confirm the model works without wiring. Check the manufacturer’s product specifications and installation instructions. Make sure you have the required mounting hardware and, if relevant, an approved adapter.
- Charge the doorbell. Follow the model’s charging instructions before mounting it.
- Set it up in its required app. Add the doorbell and connect it to Wi-Fi as instructed. App setup varies by manufacturer.
- Check Wi-Fi at the planned mounting spot. Test the connection at the door, not just near the router. If signal is inadequate there, resolve connectivity before finalizing the location.
- Choose and prepare the mounting location. Before drilling, check for concealed electrical wiring and plumbing. Use the supplied hardware appropriate for the surface and follow the manufacturer’s directions, particularly for masonry.
- Fasten the mounting plate and attach the doorbell. Use the supplied mounting instructions for the exact model, then test the doorbell and app features.
Check chime, charging, recording, and power requirements
A battery doorbell does not necessarily behave like a traditional wired doorbell. Before choosing a model, verify how it is powered, whether it can ring an indoor chime, which compatible chimes or smart speakers it supports, what recording features are available, and what Wi-Fi it requires. Compatibility is specific to the model and its ecosystem.
For example, Google’s specifications say the Nest Doorbell (battery) can use existing wiring for chime operation and recharging, but it cannot continuously record 24/7 video history. That limitation applies to this product; it should not be assumed of other brands.

Electrical and drilling safety
- Identify concealed wiring and plumbing before drilling.
- Use only an adapter and outlet arrangement permitted by the manufacturer. Google’s cited adapter instructions specifically warn against plugging it into an outdoor outlet.
- If connecting to doorbell wiring, follow the product’s power-off instructions. Ring’s hardwiring guidance says to disconnect power before beginning.
- If transformer compatibility or wiring is uncertain, stop and consult an electrician rather than improvising a connection.
