Before restarting a diesel engine that has been stored, check for water, sediment, sludge, microbial contamination, leaks, and corrosion. Replace contaminated filters, remove fuel or deposits when needed, and follow the engine’s current manual for priming and restart. There is no universal storage-age cutoff that proves diesel must be discarded: the fuel’s condition, storage environment, and equipment all matter.
Why a stored diesel system needs inspection
Water can damage fuel-system components and encourage microbial growth where water and fuel meet. Inspect the system before starting
Identify the equipment and its service instructions
Record the equipment make, model, engine, and serial number. Find the current operation and maintenance manual and any storage-restart procedure before draining, replacing parts, or priming. Filter layouts, separator designs, approved fuels, and priming methods vary. Perkins notes that fuel-pump arrangements differ and directs users to the relevant manual. Check visible components and accessible fuel
With the engine off, inspect for fuel leaks, loose or damaged lines and connections, compromised tank seals, visible corrosion, contamination around the fill opening, and damaged filters or separator bowls. Check accessible tank contents and the water separator. If the machine permits safe sampling, follow its sampling procedure and use a suitable container; a sample from the tank bottom can help reveal water or settled material. Choose whether to test, drain, filter, or replace fuel
If fuel looks questionable, contains water or sediment, or has caused repeated filter plugging, do not assume an additive or a new filter will solve the problem. Consider suitable fuel testing before deciding whether the fuel can be recovered. Perkins describes checks for water, visual condition, particles, biodiesel content, and microbial growth. No universal age threshold is established for discarding all diesel after a set number of months; fuel blend, storage conditions, tank condition, and test results affect the decision. Remove contamination and clean affected parts
Drain water or contaminated fuel only by the method specified for the tank and machine. If contamination is established, remove deposits and clean the tank as appropriate; replace contaminated filters. A filtration unit can help with suitable fuel and equipment, but it is not a universal substitute for removing sludge, replacing bad fuel, or addressing damaged components. Use a biocide only if it is appropriate and permitted for the engine and fuel, and follow both the product label and engine-manufacturer advice. Detroit Diesel discusses biocide treatment in its storage guidance, but that is not a recommendation to treat every stored system. Replace filters, prime, and restart safely
Fit the correct filters
Use the correct primary, secondary, or water-separator filter for the specific engine. Confirm fitment using the equipment serial number and current parts information; filter numbers and service procedures vary. Caterpillar’s filter instructions illustrate good service practice: drain a separator if fitted, keep dirt out, install the correct filter, prime as directed, and check for leaks after starting. Follow the manufacturer’s priming sequence
Prime the system using the procedure for that engine. Never loosen high-pressure fuel lines to bleed air; Perkins warns against this and notes that priming methods vary. Start only after service and checks are complete, then inspect for leaks and warning indicators. Account for fuel type and storage history
For relevant Perkins equipment and fuel circumstances, Perkins recommends clean diesel and new filters when restarting after storage. Its guidance for biodiesel left in the system for an extended period advises draining the tank, replacing filters, filling with clean diesel, and running the engine to clear biodiesel from the system. When to call a qualified service provider
Get qualified help when the tank is large or inaccessible, contamination is extensive, the correct cleaning method is unclear, or the system continues to plug filters or show faults after service. The cited guidance does not establish a universal procedure for tank entry, chemical cleaning, fire safety, or waste disposal. Use the equipment manual, applicable local requirements, and qualified service support rather than improvising tank-entry or chemical-cleaning steps. The EPA reports that 83 percent of 42 underground storage tanks storing diesel in its 2016 study showed moderate or severe corrosion of metal components.
