Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can move files between an Android phone and a Windows PC without Phone Link. For a direct copy, connect the phone with a data-capable USB cable, unlock it, choose File Transfer in its USB notification, and use Windows to copy files. To share wirelessly with a nearby PC, use Google Quick Share for Windows. Use cloud storage when both devices need access to the same online files, or Syncthing when you want selected folders to keep synchronizing.
Choose a method for what you need to do
| Your goal | Method | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Copy a group of files directly | USB cable and Android File Transfer mode | No account or wireless setup is needed, but the cable must support data and the phone must be unlocked. Google USB guidance. |
| Send files to a nearby PC without plugging in | Google Quick Share for Windows | Requires a compatible Windows PC, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and discoverable devices. Samsung PCs should use Samsung’s Quick Share app. Google Quick Share requirements and Android Help. |
| Access the same files from both devices over time | Cloud upload through a Google Account | Requires an account and internet access. This uploads files for cloud access; it is not a direct local transfer. Google guidance. |
| Keep selected folders synchronized | Syncthing | Requires configuring both devices, their device IDs, and the folders to share. Syncthing setup documentation. |
| Use Microsoft’s linked-device features | Phone Link and Link to Windows | Pairing and permissions are required. This is optional; it is not necessary for USB or Quick Share. Microsoft transfer guidance. |
Copy files by USB
- Unlock your Android phone.
- Connect it to the PC with a USB cable.
- On the phone, tap the notification that says Charging this device via USB.
- Under Use USB for, select File Transfer.
- In the file-transfer window on Windows, drag or copy files between the phone and PC.
- Eject the device in Windows before unplugging it.
If the phone charges but Windows does not show a file-transfer window, try another cable: some USB cables carry power but cannot transfer data. Google also recommends checking automatic hardware detection, restarting both devices, and updating Android if the connection still fails. See Google’s USB connection and troubleshooting steps. Before buying a cable, test one you already have and check which connector your phone uses.
Send files wirelessly with Quick Share
Check compatibility and install the right app
Google’s Quick Share for Windows requirements specify a 64-bit Windows 10-or-later PC, or Windows 11 or later for ARM-based devices, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled. Google’s Windows app is intended for non-Samsung PCs; for a Samsung PC, Google directs users to Samsung’s Quick Share app in Microsoft Store. Check Google’s Quick Share page for the current requirements.
Send and accept a transfer
- Install the appropriate Quick Share app on the Windows PC.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices, and keep them nearby.
- Choose the files to send and select the receiving device.
- Accept the transfer request on the receiving device.
Nearby sharing depends on device visibility and discovery, not just having the app installed. Google lists visibility choices that include Everyone; review the setting you choose and return it to a more restricted option after sharing if you opened visibility temporarily. Google also notes a Bluetooth Low Energy Extended Advertising limitation that can affect discoverability on some networks. See Google’s Quick Share help.

Use cloud storage or synchronization for different needs
Cloud upload: access files through an account
If you want the same cloud-stored files available from both devices, upload them through a Google Account and access them on the other device. This requires internet access and is distinct from a direct USB copy: files go through an online account rather than straight from the phone to the PC. Google’s file-transfer guidance also describes this account-based option.
Syncthing: keep selected folders in sync
Syncthing is for maintaining shared folders across devices, not simply sending one file once. Its setup documentation instructs users to configure each device’s ID and choose which folders to share. Community-developed builds exist for Windows, Android, and other platforms; the cited documentation does not establish a current first-party Android distribution, so check the available installation options before choosing a build. Start with Syncthing’s getting-started guide.

When Phone Link is still useful
Phone Link and Link to Windows are Microsoft’s optional linked-device route. Microsoft describes sending files from Android through Link to Windows – Send to PC in the Share Drawer; transferred items can appear in the phone’s Download folder. Its File Explorer guidance also describes wireless file access after pairing. These features require setup and permissions, but they are not prerequisites for the USB and Quick Share methods above. Read Microsoft’s transfer guide and its File Explorer setup guide.
