Keep your TV speakers if dialogue is clear and the sound fills your usual listening area. Choose a soundbar when you want a compact, straightforward way to add scale or dialogue-focused controls; consider separate speakers if you have room and want wider separation or more flexibility. None of these options is automatically best: results depend on the devices, room, placement, content, and connection.

When are TV speakers enough?

If you can comfortably follow dialogue and the sound works for the area where you usually watch, you may not need another audio device. Built-in speakers can be a reasonable fit in a small viewing environment; Dolby’s Home Theater Setup Guide also describes virtualized Atmos from TV speakers as an option for such spaces.

Judge your actual setup rather than assuming that every external system will be an improvement. The TV’s speaker design, room acoustics, listening position, and the material you watch all affect what you hear. Dolby’s guidance is a setup recommendation, not a controlled comparison of every TV and soundbar.

What a soundbar changes

A soundbar is a relatively compact upgrade when the TV’s sound feels small or dialogue is hard to follow. It can offer a larger presentation and may include dialogue-focused modes; a compatible subwoofer can add low-frequency impact. Those are potential benefits, not guaranteed improvements for every bar, room, or listener.

Dolby describes a soundbar, with or without surround satellites, as a balance of convenience and room-filling sound. Philips similarly presents it as a simple way to bolster TV audio and dialogue. These are manufacturers’ recommendations, not independent, product-by-product test results. Dolby’s setup guide and Philips’ home-cinema guide provide their respective setup advice.

When separate speakers make more sense

A stereo pair placed to either side of the TV needs more space than a single bar, but can create wider separation between left and right sounds. A receiver and individual speakers also give you more ways to tailor a dedicated theater to the room. The trade-off is more components, placement decisions, and often wiring.

Amazon Fire TV Soundbar, 2.0 speaker with DTS Virtual:X and Dolby Audio, Bluetooth connectivity
  • Amp up your audio - Fire TV Soundbar enhances TV audio with dual speakers for fuller sound, clearer dialogue, and deeper bass—all in a compact design.
  • Immersive sound - Enjoy a three-dimensional virtual surround sound experience with DTS Virtual:X and more detail with Dolby Audio.
  • Easy setup - Just plug in the included HDMI cable to the HDMI eARC/ARC port on your TV to instantly enjoy audio that's always in sync.
  • Compact design - With a length of 24“ and a height of just 2.5", Fire TV Soundbar fits most entertainment consoles and TV stands.
  • Stream audio with Bluetooth - Connect your phone or tablet via Bluetooth to fill the room with your favorite music.

Adding rear speakers can bring surround effects, while a subwoofer handles low frequencies. Treat both as optional expansions: they add equipment and placement choices, and their value depends on your room and what you watch. Philips explains these roles in its home-cinema guide; Dolby discusses the greater tailoring possible with a receiver-based system in its setup guide.

Compare the trade-offs

Option Good fit when What to weigh
TV speakers Dialogue is clear and sound is adequate for your normal viewing area. May not deliver the scale or bass you want; performance depends on the TV and room.
Soundbar You want a compact setup and a straightforward audio upgrade. Features and results vary by model. A subwoofer or satellites add components and placement needs.
Stereo speakers or a receiver-based system You have room for separate speakers and value wider separation or room-specific flexibility. More equipment, space, wiring, and setup decisions; an individual-speaker system can be more involved to expand or arrange.

The comparison describes typical setup trade-offs, not a ranking of all products. Bose, as a manufacturer, also emphasizes that traditional systems generally require more components, space, and wiring, while soundbars are less upgradeable as individual components; see its soundbar-versus-speakers guide.

Check connections and features before buying

Confirm the specific TV and audio device support the connection and audio features you intend to use. HDMI ARC/eARC can carry audio between a TV and soundbar over one cable, but do not assume that every device supports the same formats or capabilities. Dolby explains the connection in its Bring Dolby Home FAQs. Check the manufacturers’ specifications for the exact TV and bar, including the needed ports and any audio-format support.

If you plan to use TV speakers as a center channel alongside separate speakers, verify that the particular TV and audio setup support it. That capability is not universal.

For gaming, consider the signal path

Audio synchronization can depend on how the console, TV, and soundbar are connected. RTINGS’ 2024 measurements found that, for the bars and configurations it tested, connecting a source to a soundbar’s HDMI input often produced lower AV-sync error than routing audio back from the TV over ARC. The result is configuration-specific, not a guarantee for every TV, bar, or console.

Direct connection helps only if the soundbar can pass through the console’s required video resolution and refresh rate. RTINGS also notes that audio format and soundbar processing affect latency. Its discussion distinguishes audio latency from end-to-end AV-sync error; consult its measurement article and check model-specific passthrough and sync performance before choosing a connection.

ULTIMEA 5.1CH Surround Sound Bar System with Dolby Atmos, Poseidon M60
  • Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
  • Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
  • 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
  • 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

Make the decision for your room

  1. Identify the problem. If you have none—dialogue is easy to follow and the sound suits your viewing area—keep the TV speakers. If you want a bigger presentation or more dialogue control, consider a soundbar.
  2. Check the space. A bar keeps the setup compact. A stereo pair needs room beside the TV; rear speakers and a subwoofer introduce further placement choices.
  3. Decide whether expansion matters. If wider separation and the ability to tailor a theater to the room matter more than simplicity, separate speakers and a receiver may suit you better. If not, a bar may be the more convenient compromise.
  4. Verify compatibility. Confirm the TV and audio system support the ports, audio features, and—in a gaming setup—video passthrough you need.
