Choose a golf rangefinder by matching its features to how you play: decide first whether you need slope readings for casual rounds, whether you compete, and how easily you can acquire and see the flag. Distance measurement is the core function; added modes are worthwhile only if you will use them and can follow the rules for your round.
Start with how you will use it
For casual play, slope can provide an elevation-adjusted “plays like” distance. If you play in events, check the event’s Local Rules before relying on a rangefinder. Under the USGA’s guidance, distance-measuring devices are allowed unless the Committee prohibits them, but players must not use slope or wind functions during a round. Additional functions may be present as long as they are not used. USGA equipment FAQ and Rule 4.3a(1) explain the restriction.
A slope on/off switch or a manufacturer’s “tournament mode” does not guarantee that a device is permitted in every event. The Committee can prohibit distance-measuring devices altogether. Confirm the specific event’s rules, and do not access prohibited functions during the round.
Check the features that affect a reading
Flag acquisition and confirmation
The device must distinguish the flag from trees or other objects behind it. Look for a flag-priority or pin-lock feature and a confirmation cue such as vibration, a visual indicator, or a tone. Garmin and Bushnell describe these feature categories, but those manufacturer descriptions do not establish which system performs best. Magnification and viewfinder
Magnification can help you sight a distant flag, but a larger number is not automatically better. Viewfinder clarity, display readability, and how quickly you can locate the target matter too. If possible, look through the device in person and compare it with your typical playing conditions. Handling and controls
Consider button placement, weight, dimensions, display legibility, and whether you prefer a simple point-and-shoot unit or additional modes. Compare durability, support, and extras

Use specifications as specifications—not test results
As an example of how to read a product page, Callaway lists the 300 Pro with 6x magnification, a stated range of 5–1,000 yards, pin acquisition with pulse feedback, and an external switch to disable slope.
