For a household choosing satellite broadband now, Starlink is the clearest option to investigate: it publishes residential plans, but availability and terms depend on the exact address. OneWeb is described in Eutelsat’s available material as a partner-delivered business and government network, while Amazon Leo’s published evidence points to enterprise preview and a staged rollout—not a confirmed household offer in every market. Compare local service terms, not just company names or headline speeds. Amazon Leo terminal figures are maximum capabilities, and Starlink’s provider-published figures are not guarantees; the available sources do not provide a neutral, independently measured head-to-head speed test.
Are these three services equally available to households?
No. Their public customer models differ, which is the first practical distinction to check before comparing performance.
| Service | What the available provider material describes | What a household should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Starlink | Residential plans with address-based eligibility. The provider says plans and performance vary by region. | Whether service is offered at the exact address, which local plan is offered, and its full monthly and equipment costs. Use the Starlink plan overview and availability map. |
| OneWeb | Eutelsat’s available investor and prospectus-era material describes a network serving business, government, and community needs through distribution partners. | Whether a local reseller offers service to your type of customer, and the current price, terminal, coverage, and contract terms. The cited material does not establish a general household signup route. |
| Amazon Leo | Amazon announced an enterprise preview in November 2025 and described a wider rollout planned during 2026 as satellites, coverage, and capacity are added. | Whether there is a current offer for your address and customer type. A rollout plan or published terminal capability is not proof of local household availability. |
Amazon retired the name Project Kuiper and adopted Amazon Leo in November 2025. Its 2026 rollout announcement describes an initial service path in northern and southern latitudes, with expansion toward the Equator; that is a plan, not an address-level availability check. See Amazon’s rollout announcement.
How do their speed claims compare?
The published figures below describe different things: Starlink gives residential plan and typical-performance information, while Amazon lists maximum terminal capabilities. They are not comparable test results, and none guarantees what a specific customer will receive.

| Provider and figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|
| Starlink Residential Max: typical downloads up to 400+ Mbps and uploads of 20–40 Mbps; selected markets also have residential tiers capped at 100 or 200 Mbps. | These are plan details in Starlink support material accessed October 7, 2026. Starlink says residential plans include unlimited data, but market-specific terms apply. Consult the residential plan support page. |
| Starlink technical specification: typical downloads of 25–220 Mbps, uploads of 5–20 Mbps, and land latency of 25–60 ms. | Provider specification language; publication date is not stated on the page, accessed October 7, 2026. Starlink cautions that speeds are not guaranteed and may vary with location, time, and plan priority. See Starlink’s technical specifications. |
| Amazon Leo Nano: up to 100 Mbps down; Pro: up to 400 Mbps down; Ultra: up to 1 Gbps down and up to 400 Mbps up. | Maximum terminal capabilities published by Amazon in its 2025 announcement, not independently measured typical service speeds. See Amazon’s terminal and enterprise-preview announcement. |
| OneWeb | The cited Eutelsat material does not establish a current, directly comparable household speed figure or local plan specification. |
There is no neutral, independently measured head-to-head speed statistic established by these sources. A fair comparison would need the same location conditions, test method, time of day, service tier, and treatment of congestion and priority. Until you have local offers, do not infer that a higher maximum terminal rate means a faster everyday connection.
Which option fits a rural home?
Start with address eligibility and alternatives
Check whether Starlink can serve the precise address, then compare its actual local plan and equipment cost with any available terrestrial broadband. A provider’s presence in a country or region does not by itself establish an active offer at a particular home. For OneWeb or Amazon Leo, look for a current local offer addressed to residential customers rather than assuming an enterprise network can be ordered like a household plan.

- SURFACE CHECK BEFORE ORDERING — Designed for clean, flat, smooth glass or hard plastic. Suction cups may not seal correctly on textured dashboards, fabric, leather, curved panels or porous surfaces. Check your mounting area before ordering.
- TAB-LOCK X-FRAME FOR STARLINK MINI — Two lower tabs fit into the rear slots of Starlink Mini while the surrounding arms provide additional containment. This mechanical frame holds the device without loose trays or straps. Compatible with Starlink Mini only; device not included.
- DUAL LEVER-LOCK VACUUM CUPS — Clean and dry the mounting surface, press both cups firmly, then push each cam lever down until fully locked. Check both seals before every drive. Lift the lever and clear pull tab to release without adhesive residue.
- INDEPENDENT FORWARD/BACK TILT — Loosen each hand knob to adjust the forward or backward angle, then tighten both knobs firmly before driving. The two sides adjust independently. This mount does not provide left/right swivel.
- TWO CORRECT MOUNTING MODES — Use nearly horizontal on a sufficiently flat, smooth dashboard or upright at the lower corner of the front or rear windshield. Do not install on the upper windshield or sunroof. Includes one X-frame, two suction cup modules and one manual.
Check the installation conditions
Starlink requires a physical kit consisting of a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount. Installation needs a clear view of the sky; obstructions can affect service. Starlink describes its kit as plug-and-play, but you should confirm that the equipment generation and mounting arrangement fit your site before buying. Its specifications describe the required equipment.
Compare the total offer, not just the monthly fee
For each address-specific offer, compare monthly charge, hardware and installation costs, data or priority rules, typical speeds, latency, and any service limitations. The sources here do not establish a current cross-provider price comparison, so a global price ranking would be unreliable.

When might OneWeb or Amazon Leo make more sense for an organization?
Business buyers should compare more than advertised throughput. The right service can depend on whether a provider or reseller can support the customer’s sites, vehicles, or vessels and integrate the connection into existing networks.
- OneWeb: Eutelsat’s cited material presents it as a partner-mediated option for enterprise, government, and community connectivity. Ask local distributors or integrators about current terminal choices, coverage, service-level terms, support, and network integration; those details are not established by the cited material.
- Amazon Leo: Amazon’s enterprise preview and terminal announcement indicate a business-oriented offering, but local availability and commercial terms still need confirmation. Amazon’s February 10, 2026 announcement named ELCOME and MTN as maritime reseller partners. This is evidence of a business-to-business route for maritime customers, not a general household signup or proof of terms in every market. See the maritime reseller announcement.
For continuity planning, request the actual contract and verify coverage, service-level commitments, terminal options, support response, priority rules, and failover or integration requirements. For travel, maritime, or aviation use, confirm mobility authorization, coverage, antenna suitability, installation, and reseller support. A residential plan should not be assumed to support use in motion.

What about Amazon Leo direct-to-device service?
Amazon’s announced agreement to acquire Globalstar describes planned future direct-to-device services. That is a separate capability from satellite broadband delivered through a dedicated customer terminal, and it should not be treated as a service already available on ordinary smartphones. See Amazon’s Globalstar announcement.

- Identify the use case: fixed household internet, organizational connectivity, or service for a vessel or other mobile operation.
- Get an address- or route-specific offer: confirm eligibility, coverage, plan, equipment, and contract terms with the provider or authorized local reseller.
- Match the metric to the claim: distinguish typical performance from a plan limit or maximum terminal capability, and ask what priority and data rules apply.
- Check the physical installation: account for sky visibility, mounting, power, equipment class, and whether the terminal is approved for the intended fixed or mobile use.
- Compare total cost and support: include recurring and one-time charges, installation, support commitments, and network integration—not only the advertised speed.
As of the provider materials cited here, Starlink is the most directly documented household choice, OneWeb is best approached as a partner-led enterprise option unless a local residential offer is confirmed, and Amazon Leo remains subject to its staged rollout and local availability. Choose only after checking the terms for your location and use case.
