Ecotourism is a nature-based kind of tourism; regenerative tourism describes an intended direction of impact. Ecotourism has recognizable features such as nature interpretation, minimizing harm, and supporting conservation and host communities. Regenerative tourism is commonly framed as leaving a destination’s ecological or social systems better off, but the term is less clearly defined and the label alone does not prove that outcomes have been achieved.
What ecotourism means
UN Tourism defines ecotourism as nature-based tourism motivated by observing and appreciating nature and traditional cultures in natural areas. Its characteristic practices include education and interpretation, generally small-group specialist organization, and efforts to minimize environmental and sociocultural harm. It also supports protected or natural areas through benefits for host communities, employment, and greater conservation awareness. UN Tourism’s definition of ecotourism is therefore more specific than simply taking a trip outdoors.
UN Tourism’s glossary also describes ecotourism as responsible appreciation of biological and cultural diversity that protects ecosystem integrity, enhances local well-being, and minimizes impacts on ecosystems. Its ecotourism and protected areas overview provides related context.
What regenerative tourism means—and what the term does not establish
Regenerative tourism is commonly used for travel intended to contribute positively to a destination, such as by supporting ecological renewal or stronger community outcomes. But GSTC notes that the term is ambiguous and lacks a coherent operational framework. It also cautions that many of the aims described as regenerative—reducing negative impacts and enhancing positive ones—already appear within sustainable tourism. The word “regenerative” should not be treated as proof of a separate or higher standard. GSTC’s discussion of regenerative tourism explains this distinction.

In January 2026, UN Tourism’s Committee on Tourism and Sustainability reported that a position paper concluded regenerative tourism falls within the overall framework of sustainable tourism, rather than replacing or redefining it. That is the position paper’s conclusion as reported by the committee; it does not show that all tourism stakeholders have adopted one settled definition. UN Tourism’s Committee on Tourism and Sustainability reports the committee’s work.
How ecotourism and regenerative tourism differ
| Question | Ecotourism | Regenerative tourism |
|---|---|---|
| What does the term describe? | A nature-based tourism segment characterized by learning, impact reduction, conservation, and local benefits. UN Tourism | An intended positive contribution to destination systems; the term is less operationally settled. GSTC |
| Is nature central? | Yes. Nature is part of the definition. | Not necessarily. The concept may be applied more broadly to destination and community systems. |
| What should a traveler look for? | Nature interpretation, low-impact management, conservation support, and benefits for local communities. | Specific, locally grounded goals and evidence of ecological or social improvement—not just the label. |
| Can a trip be both? | Yes. A nature-based trip may also aim to make a positive contribution to local systems. | Yes. The terms describe different dimensions: ecotourism identifies a kind of tourism, while regenerative tourism expresses an intended impact orientation. |
How to assess a regenerative tourism claim
There is no formal regenerative checklist established by the sources cited here. Instead, use practical questions that connect the claim to local priorities and observable outcomes:

- Who set the priorities? Look for the role of destination residents, local organizations, or other people affected by tourism in deciding what should improve.
- What is meant to improve? Ask for specific ecological or social goals rather than a general promise to “give back.”
- How will progress be assessed? Look for evidence tied to the stated goals, not just descriptions of activities or intentions.
- Who benefits, and how? Check whether local people participate in or benefit from the tourism activity, and how conservation or restoration claims are supported.
GSTC’s destination self-assessment is organized around governance, socioeconomic impact, cultural preservation, and environmental responsibility. These pillars can help organize questions about tourism management, but completing a self-assessment does not certify a particular trip as regenerative. GSTC’s destination criteria describe those assessment areas.

Use “ecotourism” to look for a nature-based experience that combines learning with efforts to reduce harm and support conservation and host communities. Treat “regenerative” as an aspiration to investigate: ask what locally chosen outcomes the trip pursues and what evidence shows progress. The concepts can overlap, but neither the word “ecotourism” nor “regenerative” by itself tells you everything about a specific operator’s practices or results.
