You do not need all 14 permitted clubs to get started. Compare the exact clubs included, how well they suit your build and handedness, and whether the set is good quality for your budget.
Which clubs belong in a beginner set?
A typical beginner package has about nine to eleven clubs, according to Golf Monthly’s June 5, 2026 guide. Look for clubs that cover these basic roles:
- Driver: For tee shots where you want to hit the ball a long way.
- Fairway wood or hybrid: A second long-distance option; the right choice depends on what feels easier to launch and control.
- Partial iron set: A selection of irons with sensible loft gaps, rather than a full run of every iron.
- Wedge: Useful for shorter shots around the green. Some sets include a pitching wedge, a sand wedge, or both; check the contents.
- Putter: For rolling the ball on the green.
There is no mandatory recipe. The PGA of America’s First Swing guide gives a different example: a driver and 3-wood, 5-, 7- and 9-irons, a pitching wedge, a sand wedge and a putter. Treat both examples as starting points, not rules for what every beginner must own.
How should you compare beginner golf sets?
Forgiveness and launch
Beginner-friendly clubs commonly have larger heads and bigger sweet spots to help on off-center hits. Compare how easy the clubs seem to launch and control, rather than choosing only by appearance or brand.

Set makeup and distance gaps
Read the included-club list carefully. Packages vary: one may include a fairway wood, another a hybrid, and wedge or iron selections may differ. Choose a combination that covers useful shots without paying for several clubs that seem to do the same job.
Fit, handedness and try-before-you-buy
Check right- or left-handed availability, shaft options, club length and grip. Your height and other fit needs matter, but there is no single shaft or length that suits every beginner. The PGA guide recommends trying equipment before buying and identifies a PGA Professional who can fit clubs as an ideal resource. If you can, try clubs in person and ask for basic fit advice before settling on a set.

Bag, construction and budget
Confirm that the package includes a usable golf bag, and consider construction quality rather than picking on the lowest price alone. Golf Monthly’s 2026 guide gives a general beginner-package range of $200 to $1,000; that is a guide-level range, not a live quote for a particular model. Set a budget first and look for the best quality and useful club mix within it.
Should you buy a package, used clubs or a custom-fit set?
A package is convenient because it assembles a usable group of clubs in one purchase. A smaller collection or used clubs can be a sensible alternative if you are still deciding whether you enjoy golf. In either case, make sure the clubs cover the basic jobs above and fit your handedness and needs.

These are guide selections, not a universal ranking. Before buying any named set, verify its current configuration, handedness and shaft options, availability and price; those details can change.
Should a beginner get fitted, or spend on lessons first?
Trying clubs and getting basic fit advice can help you avoid an uncomfortable mismatch. But if your budget is limited, Golf Monthly argues that a novice may get more early value from lessons than from an expensive custom fitting; a tailored set can wait until your swing becomes more consistent. The PGA of America Coaching Center at PGA Frisco advertises beginner classes covering fundamentals such as holding and swinging a club, but that does not establish that a similar program is available in every location.

Do you need all 14 clubs?
No. The PGA guide says golfers may carry up to 14 clubs under the Rules of Golf, and may configure the set as they choose within that limit. Fourteen is a maximum, not a shopping target. If you play in a competition and need a rule-specific answer, consult the current Rules of Golf.
