Some open-world games let you replay missions and try different roles, challenges, or tactics, but replay rules vary by game. A replay may simply let you revisit the mission: it does not automatically unlock new approaches, change the story, or advance your save.
What replaying a mission can—and cannot—mean
“Replay” can describe several different features: restarting a completed mission, choosing among mission scenarios or roles, or taking on extra challenges during a repeat run. Those options are specific to each game. Check which missions can be replayed, when the feature unlocks, and whether the game offers selectable roles or new objectives.
Even when a game lets you replay a mission, that may be separate from continuing the campaign. The replay could return you to a menu afterward rather than move the story forward.
How replay works in specific open-world games
| Game and activity | When and how to replay | What a replay changes | Progression or save caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto Online Heists | Rockstar’s March 10, 2015 announcement describes Heists as cooperative, multi-part activities with different mission scenarios and player roles. It does not specify a general unlock condition in that announcement. | Rockstar says replaying a Heist can offer a different perspective on the action; Elite Challenges offer extra cash. This describes Online Heists, not every GTA V story mission. | The announcement does not state whether replay advances story progression or how it affects saves. |
| Assassin’s Creed Mirage main missions and contracts | Ubisoft announced replay in Title Update 1.1.0, released November 17, 2025. Access it through the investigation board’s “Animus Sequences” section or by interacting with Animus icons in the world. | Ubisoft says replays add challenges, with rewards such as Animus mods. The announcement does not establish that every mission allows any approach or changes narrative branches. | The cited update notes do not state whether replays advance story progression or alter saves. |
| Insomniac story missions | Insomniac’s support article, dated November 19, 2025, says to complete the main story first. Then open the Touchpad menu, go to the Missions tab, and select a mission. | The cited instructions explain how to replay story missions; they do not say that replays add different approaches or change outcomes. FNSM App Quests have a separate route in the support article. | The cited instructions do not specify whether replay advances the story or changes saves. Check the support article for the applicable game and version. |
| L.A. Noire cases | Select a case from the Cases menu to replay it. | The support instructions describe replaying cases; they do not establish that a replay offers different approaches. | Replay does not move the story to the next case. To advance, complete the case in Story Mode. Story and Replay files are separate: Rockstar warns that overwriting a Story file with a Replay file can make the Story file inaccessible. |
How to check the replay rules before you start
- Find the exact activity type. Look for whether replay covers story missions, side activities, contracts, cases, or only selected missions.
- Check the unlock condition. Some games require main-story completion before replay is available; do not assume the option appears as soon as a mission ends.
- Look for replay-specific choices. See whether the game lets you select a role or scenario, or adds challenge conditions. A replay option alone does not prove that a different approach is supported.
- Confirm what happens afterward. If you want to continue the campaign, check whether the replay advances the story or returns you to a menu.
- Review save warnings. If the game separates Story and Replay saves, avoid overwriting a story file unless you understand the consequences.
Does a replay change the story or let you choose a new approach?
Not necessarily. Rockstar’s GTA Online Heists announcement explicitly describes experiencing a different perspective on a replay, while Ubisoft’s Mirage update notes describe added challenges and rewards. Those are distinct examples of replay features, not evidence that all open-world games let players choose a new route or alter narrative outcomes.
