To make a projector image look brighter in daylight, first keep sunlight and other room light off the screen. Then try a brighter picture mode, turn off Eco mode if needed, and reduce the image size. These steps usually matter more than simply chasing a larger lumen rating. An ambient light rejecting (ALR) screen may help when you cannot control the light, but it does not increase the projector’s actual light output—and direct sun on the screen can still overwhelm the image.
1. Keep ambient light off the projection surface
Light reflected from the screen competes with the projector’s light. The result is lower perceived contrast: dark scenes look gray, and colors appear washed out. Begin with the screen, not with a projector upgrade.
- Close blinds or curtains, especially on windows that send sunlight onto the screen.
- Turn off nearby lights or move them so they do not shine on the projection surface.
- If direct sunlight still hits the screen, shade it or reposition the screen away from the window.
Direct sun is particularly difficult to overcome by increasing projector brightness alone. XGIMI’s daylight projection guide notes that even a high-brightness projector can struggle when sunlight falls directly on the projection surface.
2. Try projector settings that increase light output
Once the room is under control, test the projector’s higher-output picture mode. If Eco mode is enabled, turn it off and compare the image. Menu names vary by model, so check the projector’s on-screen settings or manual for lamp, light-source, or picture-mode options.

The trade-off is image quality: the brightest mode may be less color-accurate, and on some projectors it can look green-shifted. 3. Make the projected image smaller
The projector’s light is spread over the screen area. Making the image smaller concentrates that light on less area, so the image appears brighter. Test a smaller image before buying a new projector or screen.

Placement and zoom position also affect the result. Check your model’s installation guidance, and compare brightness at the image size and zoom setting you actually use; specifications alone do not tell you how bright a particular setup will look.
4. Check for brightness loss over time
If the image used to look brighter, restore what the projector can deliver before changing the setup. Clean the lens and filters according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and check that Eco mode has not been enabled. On a lamp-based projector, an aging lamp may also be reducing output; consult the manual for its replacement guidance.

5. Decide whether an ALR screen fits your room
An ambient light rejecting screen is designed to manage light arriving from particular directions. In a room where some ambient light cannot be controlled, the right ALR screen may improve perceived contrast, clarity, and color. It does not make the projector brighter in lumens.
ALR is not a universal screen upgrade. Match the screen’s optical design to the projector type, throw geometry, installation orientation, and where viewers sit. Directional or higher-gain surfaces can favor viewers near the center and look less bright off-axis. Da-Lite describes a contrast-based gray ALR screen as blocking up to 80% of ambient light, but that is a vendor description of a screen type, not a performance promise for every ALR product. 6. If you need to upgrade, compare brightness claims carefully
There is no single lumen threshold that guarantees a good daylight image. Room light, image size, screen surface, projector placement, and the way brightness is measured all affect the result. Use vendor guidance as a starting point rather than a promise.

When comparing projectors, check the brightness measurement method (for example, ISO or ANSI lumens), whether separate white- and color-brightness figures are published, and which picture mode the rating represents. Epson specifically recommends looking for both white and color brightness. Then judge the specification against your intended image size and room conditions; a number without those details is not enough to predict the result. - Shade the screen from direct sunlight; close blinds or curtains and switch off lights that illuminate it.
- Choose a higher-output picture mode and disable Eco mode if appropriate, then check whether the color trade-off is acceptable.
- Reduce the image size and reassess brightness from your normal viewing positions.
- Clean the lens and filters; check the lamp’s condition if your projector uses one.
- Consider an ALR screen only after checking compatibility with your projector, throw, viewing angles, and room lighting.
- If the image is still too dim for your regular use, compare projectors by measurement method, white and color output, rated mode, target image size, and room conditions.
