Sexual dimorphism is a recurring pattern of differences associated with sex within a species. Individual variation is the broader range of differences among members of a species, whether or not those differences relate to sex. A fossil that is larger, more robust, or shaped differently from another fossil does not, by itself, reveal the animals’ sexes—or prove they belonged to different species.

What is the difference?

Sexual dimorphism is a population-level pattern: individuals of different sexes tend, on average, to differ in some measurable way. The feature might involve body size or a particular part of the skeleton. Individual variation describes differences among individuals more generally. It can reflect sex, but it can also reflect age, genetics, health, environment, geography, evolutionary change, or ordinary variation within a population.

The two ideas are not mutually exclusive. A species can show sexual dimorphism while also having substantial variation among individuals of the same sex. The challenge is determining whether a feature tracks sex consistently, rather than merely appearing in some fossils and not others.

Why a size or shape difference does not establish sex

Suppose one fossil has a larger body or a more prominent crest than another. That contrast could be consistent with sexual dimorphism, but several other explanations remain possible:

  • Age and growth: Juveniles can look substantially different from adults. Comparing an immature specimen with a mature one may create an apparent divide that is really a change through growth.
  • Time and evolutionary change: Fossils assigned to one species may come from different geological periods. A later population may have changed over time—or the specimens may represent distinct lineages or species.
  • Geography: Individuals from separate locations may differ because they belonged to different populations. Combining them can make a population’s range of variation look like two sex-based forms.
  • Preservation and reconstruction: Fossils may be incomplete or distorted. Burial stresses can alter bone shape, and missing anatomy or uncertain restoration can affect measurements.
  • Small or uneven samples: A few specimens may not capture the range of variation within a species, making a pattern look clearer—or more divided—than it is.

These alternatives also matter when deciding whether two forms belong to one species or to separate species. A difference in appearance is evidence to investigate, not a species boundary on its own.

What evidence can help distinguish the explanations?

Paleontologists assess several kinds of evidence together. No single checklist item guarantees a correct answer, but each can help rule out competing explanations.

Excellent discovery toys for kids that like to find and crack things open.
  • Independent evidence of sex: A specimen with an independently supported sex indicator can help researchers test whether a skeletal feature is associated with sex. Medullary bone is one example discussed in the literature, but it is not a general-purpose sex marker: it occurs in females preparing to lay eggs. Egg evidence and other proposed indicators also need to be interpreted in context.
  • Comparable maturity: Researchers look for evidence that specimens were at similar growth stages, or for enough growth stages to determine whether the feature changes as an animal matures.
  • Shared place and time: Specimens from the same locality and geological interval are less likely to mix distinct populations or evolutionary periods than specimens drawn from widely separated places and ages.
  • A representative sample: A larger, comparable sample makes it easier to estimate the range of variation. Researchers also examine whether measurements form distinct clusters or instead vary along a continuum.
  • Sound preservation: The feature must be preserved well enough to measure, with deformation and reconstruction uncertainty taken into account.
  • Methods suited to the evidence: Statistical analysis should fit the sample and its limitations. Results are more informative when uncertainty is reported rather than hidden behind a simple male/female classification.

How scientists test for a pattern

Statistical tests can ask whether measurements are consistent with one broad distribution or suggest multiple forms. But finding—or failing to find—separate groups does not automatically identify the sexes. The answer depends on sample size, preservation, the amount of variation, and whether the method suits the data.

Jordan C. Mallon’s 2017 review reassessed quantitative claims of sexual dimorphism in nine nonavian dinosaur taxa. Tests of normality, unimodality, and mixture models found no statistical evidence of dimorphism in those taxa using the measurements available for the review. Mallon cautioned that this was not evidence dinosaurs lacked sexual dimorphism; it meant the available data did not establish it in those cases.

Methods developed for other datasets have their own limits. A 1999 comparison tested the means method, median method, and method of moments on body-mass data from 42 primate species. The authors reported that none of the methods appeared especially accurate under their evaluation. A 2021 PNAS paper introduced the posterior density peak, or pdPeak, method. In simulations and tests using known-sex anthropoid datasets, its authors reported unbiased estimates across a broader range of dimorphism levels than conventional methods, with reliable interval estimates. Those findings describe performance under the tested conditions; they do not make uncertain or incomplete fossil samples conclusive.

What fossil examples show

Angeac-Charente ornithomimosaurs

A 2023 eLife commentary discussed at least 61 ornithomosaurs from a Berriasian, Early Cretaceous mass-mortality deposit at Angeac-Charente, France. Because the specimens came from the same place and time, the assemblage reduces some of the geographic and temporal mixing that complicates comparisons across fossil collections. The primary study reported subtle differences in femur shape. Detecting two forms, however, is a separate step from establishing which form corresponded to which sex; that assignment required further work.

Australopithecus afarensis

A 2003 study of Australopithecus afarensis warned that geographic and temporal variation can be mistaken for sexual dimorphism. Using a simultaneous-death assemblage from Afar Locality 333 alongside additional skeletal information, the authors estimated that skeletal size dimorphism in this species was most similar to that of contemporary humans. This is a result for that species and analysis, not a universal benchmark for other fossil animals.

What can be concluded about an individual fossil?

When a specimen lacks independent evidence of sex, a researcher may be able to describe its size or anatomy, and perhaps place it within a broader population pattern. That is different from confidently labeling the individual male or female. The Natural History Museum’s educational explainer quotes dinosaur researcher Paul Barrett saying, “It’s very rare to be able to sex a dinosaur definitively.” In many cases, the most accurate conclusion is that a feature is consistent with a proposed explanation but does not distinguish it decisively from age, individual variation, population differences, preservation, or taxonomy.
