If you want a large home-cinema screen without a projector, the clearest alternative is a very large flat-panel TV. If your priority is a 100-inch-plus picture and you mainly want to avoid placing a conventional projector at the back of the room, an ultra-short-throw (UST) system is another option—but it is still a projector and retains projection-specific setup requirements.

Which projector alternative fits your goal?

  • You want no projection hardware: Look at a large flat-panel TV. Samsung lists its QN90F as a 98-inch-class 4K Neo QLED Mini LED television on its US product page. This is an example of the category, not a universal recommendation.
  • You want an image around 100 inches or larger: Consider UST, which places the projector near the screen wall. ProjectorCentral’s UST overview describes 100- and 120-inch image examples. UST changes projector placement; it does not remove projection from the setup.

Compare the options that matter

Factor Large flat-panel TV UST projector and screen
Image size Samsung lists the QN90F as 98-inch class. [Samsung US product listing] ProjectorCentral describes 100- and 120-inch examples; actual size depends on the product and screen configuration. [ProjectorCentral UST overview]
Room light Samsung lists a glare-free feature for the cited QN90F; this is a manufacturer feature claim, not a comparative test result. UST systems may use an ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screen. Epson says its SilverFlex Ultra screen can “absorb up to 90% of the ambient light”; that is Epson’s claim, not a guarantee of performance in every room.
Placement and setup The set must fit the wall and room, and it must be deliverable through the route into the home. The unit sits near the screen wall, but projector-to-screen compatibility and image geometry still matter; it is not a no-setup solution.
Price and availability Check local pricing, stock, delivery, and installation. The Samsung listing is for the US and its live details can change. Check the cost and local availability of both the projector and a compatible screen. Older review prices are historical, not current quotes.

When a large TV is the better fit

A flat-panel TV is the direct choice if “alternative” means removing projection hardware altogether. The cited Samsung QN90F listing gives a concrete 98-inch-class 4K Mini LED example, and Samsung lists a glare-free feature for that model. Whether it makes sense in your home still depends on the set fitting the room, the delivery path, local availability, and the viewing conditions you prefer.

When UST makes sense—and what it does not solve

UST can suit a room where you want a very large image but do not want a conventional long-throw projector positioned at the back. The projector sits close to the screen wall, while the system can be configured for 100- or 120-inch-class images, depending on the product and screen.

Because UST is projection, you still need to match the screen to the projector and account for placement and image geometry. An ALR screen is designed for particular projection geometries; do not assume one screen works with every UST model. Epson’s SilverFlex Ultra 100-inch screen is described for compatible EpiqVision UST laser projectors. Epson’s ambient-light statement is a manufacturer claim, not independently verified performance across different rooms.

Check the room before choosing

  • Measure the viewing wall and delivery route: A very large television must fit both the intended location and the route into the room.
  • Consider ambient light: Samsung lists a glare-free feature on the cited TV, while UST screens may be designed to reject some ambient light. Neither fact establishes identical performance or guarantees a washout-free image in every room.
  • Confirm screen compatibility for UST: Match the exact screen to the projector rather than relying on the label “ALR.”
  • Include installation in the decision: A large TV has physical-fit and delivery considerations; a UST system still requires appropriate placement and screen alignment.
  • Verify local costs and stock: Prices, availability, delivery, and installation vary by region and change over time. Older screen-review prices should not be treated as current.

How to make the decision

  1. Decide whether you mean “no projector” or simply “no projector at the back of the room.” If you want no projection hardware, focus on flat-panel TVs.
  2. Set your target image size. A 98-inch-class TV is one fixed-panel example; UST systems can offer 100- or 120-inch-class images, depending on configuration.
  3. Check room light, wall space, delivery access, and installation needs for the option you are considering.
  4. If considering UST, verify that the screen is intended for your exact projector model and setup.
  5. Compare current local pricing, stock, delivery, and installation before committing; the cited product pages and older reviews do not establish a universal current price.
