Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 4v4 Marvel team fighter, while Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is a 2v2 Marvel/Capcom crossover. Tōkon also has a game-specific Marvel story presented through motion comics. If you want older arcade-era Marvel/Capcom games rather than one new fighter, the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection is a separate bundle of seven titles.

How Tōkon compares at a glance

Feature MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection
What it is A new Marvel team fighter from Arc System Works, PlayStation Studios, and Marvel Games. A Marvel and Capcom crossover fighting game. A collection of seven separate arcade fighting games, not one new game with a shared roster.
Team format 4v4 tag team fighter. 2v2 partner battles. Rules and team formats vary by included game; see the title-specific Capcom manual.
Roster note 20 playable characters at launch, according to the official PlayStation game page. PlayStation described 30 characters at launch in its 2017 launch post; that is a historical launch count. Seven games are included; there is no single collection-wide roster.
Distinctive systems and presentation Official materials emphasize 4v4 team combat and an original Episode Mode story told with motion comics and manga illustrations. Players select one of six Infinity Stones, each with unique powers that affect a battle. Each arcade game has its own mechanics; collection features include online play and other options.

PlayStation announced Tōkon for PS5 and PC, with an August 6, 2026 release date and August 7 local launch in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and Korea. The Infinite comparison comes from official 2017 product and launch material, so check current storefronts for its present availability.

Why 4v4 is the biggest difference

Tōkon’s defining format is four characters on each team. Producer Takeshi Yamanaka called it the “ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter” in the official announcement. Infinite instead uses 2v2 partner battles, as described by PlayStation and Capcom.

That difference gives Tōkon a larger team structure to manage than Infinite’s two-character pairing. It does not, by itself, establish which game is more difficult, more balanced, or better for competitive play; the official sources cited here do not provide comparative evidence for those judgments.

#1 Best Overall
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls- PlayStation 5
  • Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
  • Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
  • Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
  • Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.

Does Tōkon require learning four characters?

Yamanaka has said that players only need to master one character to play Tōkon, despite its team format. That is the producer’s stated design goal, not independent proof that Tōkon is easier than Infinite or other team fighters. Players who want to specialize in one favorite character may find the stated approach appealing, while the 4v4 setup still distinguishes the match format from Infinite’s 2v2 battles.

The games use different Marvel worlds and story approaches

Tōkon is a Marvel-only fighter with a story made specifically for the game. PlayStation describes its Episode Mode as an original scenario featuring a new threat and a reassembled X-Men, presented with manga illustrations, motion comics, and voice acting in ten languages. Its official announcement also notes PS5 Tempest 3D AudioTech support.

Infinite is built around a Marvel/Capcom crossover and a cinematic story about the two universes merging. Its roster brings characters from both publishers together, rather than focusing solely on Marvel heroes and villains.

The Fighting Collection takes a different route again: it gathers seven existing arcade titles, including X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom 2. It is for players interested in a selection of older crossover games, not a new Tōkon-style story or a single common fighting system.

Signature mechanics: Infinity Stones versus distinct arcade systems

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

Infinite lets players choose one of six Infinity Stones—Power, Time, Space, Reality, Mind, or Soul. The selected stone has unique powers that can affect a battle. This is the clearest named signature mechanic in the official Infinite materials cited here.

Tōkon

The official Tōkon announcement emphasizes its 4v4 tag-team structure. It does not establish a comprehensive list of combat mechanics, so it is better not to infer additional systems from the format alone.

Fighting Collection

The collection does not impose one universal mechanic across all seven games. Capcom’s manual documents controls and systems title by title. For example, in Marvel Super Heroes specifically, the Infinity Gauge and Infinity Gems have effects that include movement speed, armor, projectiles, and healing. Those are that game’s mechanics, not Infinite’s selectable-stone system and not rules shared by every collection title.

How many characters are in Tōkon?

The official PlayStation game page lists 20 playable characters at launch. Keep that launch figure separate from the open beta’s changing playable roster: the July 2026 beta guide initially listed 15 characters, and its July 23 update said Green Goblin would also be playable in the beta. Beta availability is not the same as the launch roster.

Does Tōkon have a story mode?

Yes. Its Episode Mode is a game-specific Marvel narrative presented through motion comics and manga illustrations, with full voice acting in ten languages. PlayStation says the scenario was written with a writer from Marvel comics. The presentation is a notable contrast with Infinite’s cinematic crossover story and with the Fighting Collection’s emphasis on playing the arcade titles themselves.

During the July 24–26, 2026 open beta, PlayStation described access to the first three chapters of the Amazing Guardians Episode Mode story, along with casual and ranked online matches, local Versus Mode, open lobby, a Start Up Battle tutorial, and Training Mode. Those details describe the beta offering and should not be read as a complete statement of post-launch mode availability.

Which Marvel fighter should you choose?

  • Choose Tōkon if you want a modern, Marvel-only 4v4 team fighter with an original, motion-comic story. It was announced for PS5 and PC; its official announcement lists Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Ultimate editions. At the February 2026 announcement, Digital Deluxe included a Year 1 Characters & Stage Pass for four additional characters and one stage; Ultimate added named costumes and a color unlock. Check current platform listings for the live edition contents.
  • Consider Infinite if you specifically want a Marvel/Capcom crossover, 2v2 partner battles, and the Infinity Stone choice. Its cited launch information is from 2017, so verify current store availability before planning a purchase.
  • Consider the Fighting Collection if you want multiple older arcade-era Marvel/Capcom titles in one collection. PlayStation lists online features including ranked and casual matches, lobbies, co-op, spectating, and rollback netcode; options and rules vary by game.

Platforms and online-play notes

Tōkon’s official announcement names PS5 and PC. Its PlayStation FAQ says PC players need a PlayStation Account linked to the game for online play. The official game page also says offline gameplay or cinematics can be paused. These are platform-specific details rather than general requirements for every Marvel fighter.
