If you’re unsure what to do next in Spiritfarer, start with your spirits’ active requests. Their goals point you toward places to explore, materials to collect, and boat upgrades to pursue. The core loop is to explore, gather and process resources, improve your boat, then use its new capabilities to continue the story.
What to do when you’re stuck or missing a resource
Check your active spirit requests and the requirements shown for the boat upgrades you can buy. Then look for an island, activity, or production step that could supply what you need. Thunder Lotus Support’s advice is to “keep exploring, and keep fulfilling your spirits’ requests” to find new resources: Thunder Lotus Support.
A missing material does not always mean you have overlooked a nearby island. Some resources require processing, and some areas are blocked until you have a particular boat improvement or have advanced the story. Treat requests as clues to the next useful step rather than as optional errands.
Read the requirements before setting out
Use the in-game menus to identify the exact material or capability you lack. If an upgrade calls for a processed item, trace it back through the relevant building: for example, logs are made into planks at the Sawmill, ore into ingots at the Foundry, and fibers are woven at the Loom. Some advanced sheets require the Smithy. The specific requirement list in your save is more useful than memorizing a general recipe list.

Distinguish the kind of obstacle
- A blocked route: You may need a functional boat improvement that handles the barrier.
- A missing material: Find its source, then check whether a production building must process it.
- No apparent route forward: Continue exploring and fulfilling requests; story progression can open access to new places.
- A story gate: In some cases, releasing one or more spirits is required to reach a new area. Spoiler note: letting spirits go is a central story event, not a sign that you have failed or made a mistake.
Which boat upgrades matter first?
Albert’s Shipyard is the hub for improving your boat. Keep two categories separate: ship-size upgrades expand the boat, while functional improvements provide capabilities such as crossing certain barriers or travelling faster. A secondary upgrade guide describes size upgrades as purchases with Glims and functional improvements and Blueprint Station upgrades as material-based; check the in-game menu for the current requirements in your version.

- Access: Does the improvement open a region you need for a request or resource?
- Space: Would a larger boat make room for a building or passenger you need?
- Time: Would a speed improvement reduce travel, or would a new production building save repeated work?
- Progression: Is the upgrade enough to pass the obstacle, or does the next step also depend on a spirit’s request or story?
The secondary guide lists barrier improvements for ice, rocks, and mist, as well as several speed upgrades. These do different jobs: a barrier improvement grants access through a particular obstacle, while speed upgrades reduce travel time. Let your map and current requests determine which function has value now.

How to manage resources without grinding blindly
Gather with a purpose: match the material you need to the request, building, or upgrade that uses it. When the item is not available in raw form, follow its production chain and make sure the relevant station is built and accessible. This avoids spending time collecting materials that do not move your current goals forward.
- Check active requests and upgrade requirements before choosing your next destination.
- Note whether a listed item is raw or processed; a plank, ingot, woven fiber, or sheet may require another station.
- When a route is blocked, identify whether the requirement is a boat improvement, a resource, or story progression.
- Revisit requests after unlocking a new region or building; newly available materials can change which goals are practical.
How spirit requests and releases fit progression
Spiritfarer asks you to care for spirit friends and eventually release them into the afterlife. Requests are part of that relationship and also guide exploration and progression. Some areas require releasing one or more spirits, according to Thunder Lotus Support. The sources establish that this can be a progression gate, but not a spoiler-free optimal order for releases. Follow the stories at your own pace; do not treat a departure as a punishment or assume every spirit must be kept aboard to make progress.

As you add buildings and passengers, use additional space to support what your current requests require. Consider where you want to place stations you visit often and leave room for buildings tied to upcoming goals. Organization is a convenience choice, not a substitute for the specific upgrades or story steps needed to unlock new areas.
