To install DDR4 RAM and use dual-channel memory, shut down and unplug the PC, then install two compatible DIMMs in the cross-channel slots specified by your motherboard manual. Seat each module straight down until its retaining clip locks, then check BIOS to confirm the memory is detected. The correct slots vary by board; A2 and B2 are common in the cited examples, not a universal rule.

Before installing DDR4 RAM

  • Check compatibility. Confirm that the motherboard and processor support DDR4 and the DIMM capacity and speed you plan to use. DDR generations have different notches and are not interchangeable; an ASUS DDR4 board manual, for example, warns against inserting DDR, DDR2, or DDR3 modules into its DDR4 slots. Consult the manual and current support information for your exact board and CPU. ASUS P11C-M/10G-2T manual
  • Find the recommended slots. Look up the motherboard model and use its memory-configuration diagram. Slot labels, colors, and recommended layouts differ by board; the diagram is more reliable than assuming that a particular color or slot pair is correct. ASUS memory installation guidance
  • Choose modules with the platform in mind. A matched kit is a straightforward choice for a two-DIMM upgrade. Check supported capacity, speed, and configuration. ASUS recommends matching CAS latency and suggests modules from the same vendor for compatibility on the cited board. Intel warns that mixing DIMM part numbers on Intel 600-series motherboards with 12th-generation Core processors may reduce memory speed or prevent booting; that warning is specific to that platform, not a blanket rule for every PC. Intel memory guidance

Install the DIMMs

  1. Shut down and disconnect power. Turn off the PC and unplug its power cord before opening the case or handling memory.
  2. Open the retaining clips. Release the clip or clips on the chosen slot as its design requires.
  3. Align the notch. Hold the DIMM over the slot and line up its off-center notch with the key in the socket. It fits in only one orientation. If the notch does not line up, stop rather than forcing it.
  4. Press the module into place. Keep it upright and press down evenly at both ends where appropriate for the socket. The retaining clip should return to its locked position. Do not insert the DIMM at an angle or force it; incorrect alignment can damage the module or slot. MSI DDR4 installation guide
  5. For two DIMMs, use the manual’s cross-channel pair. A2 and B2 are the two-module recommendation in the cited ASUS and MSI examples, but your board may specify a different pair. Install one DIMM in each of the two channels using the exact layout shown in your manual.

Which slots should you use?

Use the memory configuration table in your exact motherboard manual. For illustration, ASUS’s FAQ for its example board recommends A2 for one module, A2 and B2 for two, and A1, A2, B1, and B2 for four. The ASUS P11C-M/10G-2T manual and MSI guide also show A2/B2 for two DIMMs. These examples demonstrate a common layout, not a rule that applies to every motherboard. Installed memory Example layout on ASUS’s cited board What to do on another board
One DIMM A2 Use the single-module slot specified by its manual.
Two DIMMs A2 and B2 Use the recommended cross-channel pair specified by its manual.
Four DIMMs A1, A2, B1, and B2 Confirm the supported population order and capacity in its manual.

When channel capacities differ, behavior can also depend on the motherboard. For example, the ASUS H110M-A/DP manual says the lower-capacity channel is mapped for dual-channel operation and excess capacity on the larger channel is mapped for single-channel operation. Treat that as guidance for that model, not a guarantee about other boards. ASUS H110M-A/DP manual

Check that the memory is detected

  1. Reconnect power and start the PC.
  2. Open BIOS/UEFI and check the DRAM status or reported memory capacity. ASUS recommends checking whether the memory is recognized after installation. ASUS installation and detection guidance
  3. If a module or some capacity is missing, shut the PC down, unplug it, and reseat the DIMM. Recheck the slot layout against the manual before trying again.
  4. Once the memory is detected, Windows Task Manager can show reported memory speed, according to MSI’s guide. A displayed speed alone does not establish that a particular XMP profile is active. MSI memory guide

Enable an XMP memory profile, if supported

Dual-channel operation is about installing memory across the board’s channels. XMP is a separate BIOS option for applying a memory profile; it does not determine which slots create the channel configuration. If the DIMMs provide an XMP profile and the motherboard supports it, enable the profile in BIOS/UEFI, save the setting, and check the resulting speed. The achievable frequency depends on the CPU and motherboard as well as the memory, so a profile’s advertised speed is not guaranteed on every system. MSI XMP and memory-frequency guidance

If the PC does not start or reports less RAM than expected

  • Recheck orientation and seating. Power off and unplug the system, then confirm the notch is aligned and the retention clip has locked.
  • Verify the slots. Confirm that each DIMM is in a slot supported for the chosen configuration, especially when using two modules.
  • Check compatibility and mixing. Revisit the motherboard and CPU memory support information. On Intel 600-series/12th-generation Core systems, Intel specifically cautions that mixed DIMM part numbers can lower target speed or stop the system from booting.
  • Separate detection from speed. First confirm that the BIOS recognizes the expected capacity; only then troubleshoot speed or an XMP setting.
