Check your motherboard and processor before comparing DDR4 and DDR5: they determine which memory generation your PC can use. If you are building on Intel Core Ultra 200S, the platform specifies DDR5. If you already own a DDR4 system, a compatible DDR4 kit may be the practical upgrade; moving to DDR5 can mean replacing the motherboard and processor as well as the RAM.

Can your PC use DDR4 or DDR5?

Memory generation is a compatibility requirement, not a setting you can change. DDR4 and DDR5 modules are not interchangeable by assumption. Check the exact motherboard specifications and processor support before buying; a kit must suit the board, not just the CPU brand or the advertised speed.

For AMD systems, AMD’s memory compatibility resource lists tested kits and information about EXPO and XMP support. Use it alongside the specific motherboard’s memory support information. A listing for a tested kit is useful guidance, but confirm the board model and configuration you intend to use.

New Intel Core Ultra 200S builds

Intel’s 2026 processor support matrix and Core Ultra 200S Series 2 product brief specify DDR5 for this desktop platform. Supported speeds vary by processor SKU and DIMM configuration. A kit’s advertised overclocked profile is not a guarantee that your system will run at that speed; check the processor and motherboard specifications.

When is DDR4 the sensible choice?

If your current motherboard supports DDR4 and you need more capacity or a replacement for a faulty kit, a compatible DDR4 kit can address that need without changing memory generation. Verify the exact board’s capacity and speed support before choosing a kit.

Switching an existing DDR4 system to DDR5 is a platform decision. If the motherboard cannot accept DDR5, buying DDR5 memory alone will not make the system compatible; budget for a compatible motherboard and, if needed, a processor change. Compare that full upgrade cost with the cost of adding or replacing DDR4 in the system you have.

Does DDR5 improve gaming performance?

It can, but the result depends on the system configuration and the game. In a mid-2026 Tom’s Hardware comparison of Intel LGA 1700 configurations across a 16-game suite, DDR4 delivered 14% lower average gaming performance than DDR5 in the tested setup; some games had larger drops. That result describes those test configurations, not a universal performance forecast for every processor, graphics card, game, or application. See Tom’s Hardware’s DDR4 vs. DDR5 comparison for the test context.

For a new build, use benchmarks for the processor, graphics card, and applications you plan to run rather than treating the generation-level result as a promise. For an existing DDR4 PC, weigh any expected workload benefit against the cost of changing the platform.

How to choose a kit for your build

  1. Identify the platform. Check the exact motherboard and processor model, then confirm which memory generation they support.
  2. Check capacity and configuration. Make sure the board supports the kit’s capacity and the DIMM arrangement you plan to install.
  3. Choose a supported speed. Compare the kit rating with the processor and motherboard specifications. Treat EXPO or XMP profiles as settings to verify, not guaranteed results.
  4. Compare the complete cost. If moving from DDR4 to DDR5 requires a new motherboard or processor, include those parts in the comparison rather than comparing RAM-kit prices alone.

Which generation is worth buying?

For a compatible new Intel Core Ultra 200S desktop build, choose DDR5 because that platform specifies it. For an existing DDR4 PC, first consider a compatible DDR4 capacity upgrade; move to DDR5 when the benefits for your workload justify the total platform cost. Current like-for-like retail pricing is not established here, so there is no supported basis for declaring either generation cheaper today.
