Android phones receive updates at different times because each release must be prepared for specific phone models and software versions, may need carrier testing, and can be sent out gradually. A phone may also be outside its manufacturer’s support period. The exact timing depends on the model, software variant, carrier and region—not just the Android version.
Why the same Android update reaches phones on different dates
Manufacturers adapt and test updates for each model
An Android release is not one identical package that can be installed on every phone. Manufacturers adapt the software to a model’s hardware and their own software, then check that it works. Different models and components can require different work. A 2018 Federal Trade Commission report describes manufacturers applying updates, customizing software and testing compatibility. A study of Android security-update records through 2023 also examines device-specific update processes: 50 Shades of Support: A Device-Centric Analysis of Android Security Updates.
Carrier and regional versions can affect the route
For some devices, carrier testing adds checks for network compatibility and phone functions. The FTC report describes testing that can cover calling, voicemail, roaming, emergency calls, data use and memory. Testing may be specific to a device and carrier, and different carriers can finish at different times. This does not mean every carrier approves every Android update; the process depends on the phone and software variant.
Samsung says factory-unlocked devices may require more testing because they must work across carriers, so their updates may be delayed compared with carrier-branded devices. That is a Samsung support explanation, not a rule that applies to every unlocked phone. See Samsung’s software-update guidance.

Rollouts may be staged
An update announcement does not mean every eligible phone can download it immediately. Google says Pixel updates roll out gradually and may take a few weeks to reach a particular device, depending on carrier and device. Google’s Android 17 guidance also describes release in staged batches. Samsung says a newly released update may be distributed in waves. These are rollout practices, not a platform-wide estimate of how long every Android owner will wait. Google’s guidance is at Learn when you’ll get software updates on Google Pixel phones and Explore What’s New: Android’s Latest Features.
Which kind of update are you waiting for?
“Android update” can mean several things, and their timing or eligibility may differ:
Rank #2
- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
- Major Android version: Changes the phone’s Android operating-system version. Availability depends on whether the exact model is eligible and when its manufacturer releases the update for its software variant.
- Security update: Delivers security fixes. A manufacturer may publish a schedule for certain models, but that schedule is not the same as a promise about when a major Android version will arrive.
- Google Play system update: Updates supported modular Android components separately from a full OS upgrade.
- Feature update: Android Drops can provide some features through Google Play Services or apps, while Pixel Drops bring device-specific features to Pixel phones. Google says many Android Drop features work without the latest OS, though some require particular hardware or a newer version. Details are in Google’s Android feature guidance.
Eligibility and support depend on the exact phone
Even if two phones are from the same brand, they may not have the same support window. Google’s current policy lists seven years of OS and security updates for Pixel 8 and later, counted from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US; earlier Pixel models have different periods. Samsung states that selected Galaxy devices can receive up to seven years of security updates. These are manufacturer policies for eligible devices, not a universal Android guarantee.
Security-update frequency is a separate issue from support duration and major-version timing. Samsung lists selected devices on monthly, quarterly or biannual security-update schedules. A schedule does not mean every model receives a monthly patch or establish when its next Android version will arrive. See Samsung Mobile Security’s update scope.

How to check your phone’s update status
- On a Pixel: Open Settings > System > Software update to view the status and check for an available update. Google notes that availability depends on the carrier and device.
- On another Android phone: Check the manufacturer’s update information for the exact model. Google directs owners of non-Pixel devices to the manufacturer or carrier for device-specific details.
- For a carrier-sold Samsung phone: Check the carrier’s update information; Samsung says carrier pages may show update histories. Allow for a wave-based release.
- Confirm the variant: Compare the full model and carrier or regional software version—not just the brand name—with the manufacturer’s availability notice.
If a phone has not received an update, first confirm that the specific model and software variant are eligible and check the relevant manufacturer or carrier status information. A different phone’s rollout date does not establish that yours should already have the update. The available guidance does not establish one average wait time across Android phones.
