Check that the game is compatible first
Performance tuning cannot fix a game that will not launch or whose anti-cheat system is incompatible. Microsoft warns that some Windows 11 Arm games may not work if they depend on anti-cheat drivers that were not built for Windows 11 Arm. Check the game publisher’s compatibility guidance and the evolving, third-party crowdsourced Works on WoA compatibility list before spending time on settings. Microsoft says it contributes compatibility data to the list; a listing is useful evidence, not a guarantee for every laptop or game update. Check whether the game runs natively or through emulation
When a game publisher offers an Arm64 version, try it. Microsoft says apps rebuilt for Windows Arm-based PCs have the best performance. That general guidance does not predict how a specific game will run: results still depend on the game and the laptop. Games without a native build may run through x64 emulation. Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism emulation improvements, but those improvements are not a game-specific performance guarantee. Microsoft’s FAQ describes Arm app performance and Prism.
Set a graphics preference for the game
Windows 11 lets you choose a graphics preference for an individual game when the PC has more than one GPU. The available choices can include letting Windows decide, Power saving, or High performance; the effect depends on the hardware and what Windows offers for that game.

- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game in the app list. If it is not listed, use the option to add a desktop app and browse to the game’s executable.
- Select Options, choose a preference if available, and select Save.
- Close and restart the game, then compare its behavior with the previous setting.
Use one change at a time so you can tell whether it helps. Microsoft documents these per-app choices in its Windows 11 graphics guidance.
Try optimizations for windowed or borderless games
For compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games played in windowed or borderless windowed mode, Windows 11 can switch presentation from the legacy blt model to flip model. Microsoft says this can reduce frame latency and enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. Whether you see a benefit depends on game compatibility and display support; this setting is not a universal fix for fullscreen play or other graphics APIs.

- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Turn on Optimizations for windowed games.
- Restart the game and test it in windowed or borderless windowed mode.

Use Auto SR only if your laptop and game qualify
Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) uses AI upscaling to render a supported game at a lower resolution and upscale the image. It is an opt-in feature for eligible devices, not a general Windows on Arm switch. Microsoft’s current requirements include a Copilot+ PC with Snapdragon X or X2 and a Hexagon NPU, Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, a display of at least 1080p, and current graphics and neural-processor drivers plus the latest Auto SR package. For Snapdragon Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft identifies 1280 × 800 as an ideal input resolution. Treat that as a recommendation, not a guaranteed best setting for every game or display. Microsoft’s Auto SR support page lists requirements and supported configurations.

Enable and verify Auto SR for a supported game
- Update Windows and the laptop’s graphics and neural-processor drivers; confirm the Auto SR package is current.
- Enable Auto SR for the game either in the Xbox Game Bar’s Display widget under the Auto SR tab, or in Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Set the game to a supported resolution and use Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen, as applicable.
- Check the Game Bar widget or status indicator to confirm Auto SR is active. If it remains enabled but inactive, check the resolution and whether the game needs to be restarted.
Check the game’s runtime and API
Auto SR supports games using DirectX 10 or later that run natively as Arm64 or as x64, including through x64 emulation. It does not support x86-only games, DirectX 9, Vulkan, or OpenGL. Microsoft also lists certain formats, including 10-bit, as unsupported. A game can therefore run on Windows on Arm yet still be ineligible for Auto SR.
Balance upscaling against image quality
Auto SR currently does not support HDR content. Its lower render resolution can make fine text and user-interface details less clear, and the upscaling model may render some elements imperfectly. If the image looks worse, turn Auto SR off or try another supported resolution. The supported-game, format, and configuration details are in Microsoft’s Auto SR guidance.

Use Auto HDR for appearance, not as an FPS fix
Auto HDR can expand the color range and brightness of supported SDR games, but it requires an HDR-capable display and is a display-appearance feature—not a promised frame-rate improvement. Microsoft says enabling Auto HDR also turns on optimizations for windowed games. Auto HDR and Auto SR are separate features, and Auto SR does not currently support HDR content, so choose based on whether you value HDR output or want to use Auto SR. Test changes in a controlled way
Because performance depends on the specific game and laptop, compare your own results rather than assuming a setting is faster. Change one option at a time and keep the game’s scene, resolution, and display mode as consistent as practical. Note whether the game launches, feels smoother, or shows image-quality problems; revert a change if it makes the experience worse. The Microsoft guidance cited here provides feature requirements and settings, but does not establish a universal FPS gain for Windows on Arm gaming.
