A practical home-NAS 3-2-1 plan keeps the NAS as one copy, a versioned backup on a separate local device such as an external USB drive as a second, and another copy off-site—in cloud storage or on a remote NAS. Keep multiple recoverable versions and test restoring files. RAID and snapshots can help with some failures, but they do not replace an independent off-site backup.

What 3-2-1 means for a home NAS

The rule is three copies of important data, stored on two types of media, with one copy kept off-site. Synology describes it as a basic backup strategy. For a home setup, count the NAS as one copy, a separate local backup device as the second, and an off-site destination as the third. Synology’s 3-2-1 overview

“Copies” should mean recoverable data, not simply multiple disks containing the same live files. RAID helps keep a system available when a drive fails, but RAID is not a separate backup. Snapshots on the NAS can help recover from some accidental changes, but they remain at the same site and do not protect against losing the NAS and its storage together. Synology warns that RAID crashes or disk failures can still result in data loss. Synology’s 3-2-1 overview Synology backup guidance

Build the three copies

Copy 1: The live data on the NAS

Start with the folders and shared data you want to recover: for example, documents, photos, and other files stored on the NAS. Also identify data on computers that is not already copied to the NAS; a NAS backup does not automatically cover files that never reach it.

Copy 2: A versioned local backup

Back up NAS data to a separate local destination, such as an external USB hard drive. It provides a distinct medium and usually gives you a direct route to recover files without first downloading them or retrieving hardware from another location. Synology lists USB Copy and Hyper Backup among its backup tools, and its guidance gives external drives as an example of a different storage medium. Exact features depend on the NAS platform and software version. Synology backup guidance Synology USB Copy

Choose a backup method that keeps earlier versions, rather than only mirroring the latest state. If a file is deleted, overwritten, or corrupted and that change reaches a simple mirror, the mirror may no longer contain the earlier file. Synology’s Hyper Backup documentation describes multi-version restore and version history; verify that your NAS and chosen destination support the features you plan to use. Copy 3: An off-site backup

Keep another backup away from the home NAS. Cloud storage is an option if you do not have a second location; a remote NAS is an alternative if you can keep and maintain another device elsewhere. Synology’s guidance includes cloud providers, C2 Storage, and remote NAS destinations as examples. These are examples for compatible Synology systems, not a guarantee that every NAS supports every destination. Synology backup guidance

Off-site option Works well when Tradeoffs to check
Cloud backup You do not have a second physical site or prefer a managed off-site destination. Recurring cost, storage capacity, upload and restore time, provider retention, and compatibility. Confirm current terms for the service and your region.
Remote NAS You can place a second device at another location and want a physical destination under your control. Hardware cost, maintenance at the remote site, network setup, and the time and effort needed to restore data from there.

Set scope, schedule, and retention

  1. Inventory what matters. List the NAS shares and the connected computers whose files need protection. Decide which data must be recoverable and how much recent work you could tolerate losing for each category.
  2. Choose the local destination. Configure a versioned backup from the NAS to a distinct local device, such as an external USB drive. Synology users can check the compatibility and current instructions for tools such as USB Copy or Hyper Backup.
  3. Add an off-site destination. Select cloud storage or a remote NAS based on your available location, capacity, budget, and restore needs. Confirm that the service or destination works with your NAS and backup software.
  4. Choose a schedule and retention. Set backup frequency according to how often files change and how much data loss is acceptable. Set the number or age of versions according to the data’s change rate and available capacity. There is no single schedule or retention period established as best for every household.
  5. Keep recovery access usable. Record where the off-site account credentials and recovery instructions are kept so you can reach the backup if the home NAS is unavailable.

Test that you can restore files

A job status showing success does not prove that a restored file will be usable. Periodically restore representative files from the local backup and the off-site copy, then open them and check that their contents are intact. Synology identifies tested restoration as part of a stronger backup approach. Synology backup guidance

Test the recovery path you would actually need: know which backup contains the desired version, how to access it, and what steps are required to retrieve the data. A restore test can expose problems such as unavailable credentials, unsupported destinations, or a process that takes longer than expected.

Choose hardware and services to fit your data

An external USB hard drive is a straightforward way to add a separate local backup medium. Choose capacity based on the data to be protected, the space needed for retained versions, and expected growth; without those figures, no particular drive capacity or model can be recommended. A secondary NAS is an optional, more involved route to a remote physical copy, not a requirement for every household.

Cloud backup can supply the off-site copy without maintaining equipment at another address. Before committing, check the provider’s current capacity, retention, compatibility, and recovery terms for your region. Costs and availability depend on the service selected; Synology’s materials identify cloud storage, including C2 Storage, as an off-site destination but do not establish a universal price or plan.
