Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your desktop stopped starting after a RAM change, first determine whether it has no power, fails its power-on self-test (POST), or starts but shows no picture. Turn it off and unplug it before handling memory. Then check the motherboard’s diagnostic indicators, reseat the modules, and test them one at a time in the slot specified by the motherboard manual. A black screen does not, by itself, prove the new RAM is faulty.
Why won’t my PC boot after installing new RAM?
The timing makes the memory change a sensible place to start, but the symptom matters. Note exactly what changed: did you replace a kit, add modules to the existing kit, or move memory between slots? Record the motherboard or desktop model, RAM part number and module count. Also note whether fans or diagnostic lights turn on.
- No power: The computer does not appear to turn on. Check the power supply switch and connections as well as any parts disturbed during installation.
- No POST: The computer powers on but does not complete its startup checks. The motherboard’s diagnostic LEDs, beep pattern, or POST code can help identify which area needs attention.
- No display: The computer powers on, but the monitor remains blank. Memory training may cause a temporary blank display after a configuration change, but a display connection or graphics issue is also possible.
Use the exact motherboard or system manual to interpret diagnostic signals; their meanings vary by model. ASUS and Intel provide model- and platform-specific memory troubleshooting guidance (ASUS motherboard troubleshooting via Power LED; Intel RAM-not-detected troubleshooting). An indicator narrows the investigation, but does not alone prove a DIMM is dead.
How do I know if my RAM is seated correctly?
- Shut down the PC if it is running, switch off the power supply, and unplug the AC power cable. Follow the handling precautions in the motherboard or desktop manual. Never reseat memory while the system is powered.
- Open the case and remove the module or modules you installed. Check that each module’s notch aligns with the slot. Look for visible dirt on the contacts or in the slot; do not scrape contacts or use improvised liquids. ASUS advises checking for dirt, while Kingston provides installation guidance in its memory support page.
- Align the notch and press evenly until the module is fully seated and the retention mechanism engages. Do not force it. If it does not seat with even pressure, stop and recheck the orientation and the manual.
- Reconnect power and try starting the PC. Check the motherboard indicators or manual if it still does not complete POST.
Test one module at a time
Use the slot the motherboard manual specifies for a single module. Slot numbering and recommended placement vary, so do not assume a generic label or slot position applies. Test each module separately in that same recommended slot, changing only the module between attempts. ASUS and MSI recommend starting with one module and adding modules individually; AMD also recommends individual DIMM tests to help isolate a module or slot problem (ASUS; MSI; AMD system stability guidance).

- If one module repeatedly fails in the recommended slot while another works, suspect the failing module or its compatibility. Confirm with the memory or system vendor before concluding it is defective.
- If several modules work in that slot, add them one by one in the manual’s recommended population order.
- If multiple modules fail only in one slot or memory channel, the cause may be the motherboard, processor memory-controller path, socket or contact condition, or another component—not necessarily the RAM. Consult model-specific service support rather than replacing parts on that result alone.
AMD notes that memory support depends on the processor platform and recommends qualified hardware configurations. Its stability guidance can help frame checks, but use the exact board and system documentation for your configuration.
Check that the RAM and slot configuration are supported
Compare the modules with the exact motherboard or desktop model’s specifications and manual. Verify the memory generation, supported capacity, module count, supported configurations, and recommended slots. Check the manufacturer’s qualified vendor list (QVL) if one is available. A QVL is a reference to tested configurations; a kit missing from the list is not automatically incompatible.

- Capacity – 32GB RAM KIT (2 x 16GB Modules) Speed up to 2666MHz Non-ECC Unbuffered 288-Pin 1.2V UDIMM.
- Specs – Black PCB Color and Dual Rank (2Rx8).
- Compatibility – Designed for selected DDR4 Desktop PCs and workstations that support 288-Pin UDIMM memory. NOT compatible with Laptop SODIMM slots.
- Installation – Plug-and-Play Upgrade, Quick and Easy to Install, no expertise required (please refer to your system's manual for guidelines).
- Warranty – All Timetec products are high-quality and rigorously tested to meet stringent standards. Backed by Timetec Limited Lifetime Warranty and professional technical support based in the United States.
If you added a second kit, matching the advertised speed or brand does not establish that the combined configuration is supported. Test the new kit by itself and then restore and test the old configuration, so you can isolate which change affects startup. Check the board and processor limits and the manufacturer’s configuration guidance; maximum capacity and speed are model-specific. See ASUS troubleshooting, AMD stability guidance, and Kingston memory support.
My computer turns on but shows no display after a RAM upgrade
After a memory configuration change, some systems may take time to train memory and can show a blank screen during that process. Kingston’s vendor guidance is to leave the computer powered on for at least 10 minutes. If the screen remains blank, Kingston suggests a power cycle; if the blank screen returns, allow another 5 minutes. This is Kingston’s guidance, not a guarantee for every system. Follow your board’s manual and diagnostic indicators if they give model-specific instructions. If the board reports a persistent fault or there is no progress after the applicable procedure, power down and continue with the checks above.

If memory checks do not resolve a no-display symptom, check the monitor input and cable, graphics card seating and power, and internal power connectors that may have been disturbed. Consult the manual for CPU, graphics, and boot indicators. MSI’s no-display guidance includes checking the graphics card and motherboard video output when the processor supports integrated graphics. AMD also lists power and display issues among possible boot causes in its boot troubleshooting guidance.

Clear CMOS only after basic checks
If you have checked seating, individual modules, slots, and compatibility, clearing CMOS may help when the board manual supports it. Disconnect AC power and follow that exact manual’s procedure for a clear jumper or battery. CMOS reset can erase customized BIOS settings, including memory profiles and boot configuration; Intel warns that custom settings are lost (Intel CMOS caveat, reviewed 2017-10-05). MSI also directs users to motherboard-specific troubleshooting (MSI no-power/no-display guidance).

Do not flash the BIOS as a generic first fix
Consider a BIOS update only if the manufacturer’s support information identifies a relevant memory-compatibility fix or says the current firmware does not support the configuration. Use the exact board or system model’s official update instructions and recovery method. Kingston notes that updates can improve DRAM compatibility but directs users to the computer manufacturer’s instructions and warns that updating is at the user’s risk (Kingston memory support). If the PC cannot boot, first confirm whether the board supports a safe flashback or recovery method; do not assume a generic flash procedure will work.
When to stop troubleshooting and get support
If the known-good old memory works in a supported configuration but the new modules do not, contact the memory vendor or system or motherboard maker about compatibility, warranty, and testing. If neither the old nor new memory works after the upgrade, recheck seating, power connections, and board indicators, then seek model-specific repair support. Avoid forcing components or jumping to a processor replacement based only on a failed memory test.
If testing indicates that you need a replacement, first identify the exact desktop or motherboard model and confirm memory type, capacity, and supported population configuration. Compare compatibility and return or warranty terms; do not choose on advertised speed or lighting alone. If compatibility or fault status remains uncertain, pursue vendor support before buying a kit.
