Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For small, occasional backups or file transfers where compactness matters, a USB flash drive is a practical option. For larger or recurring computer backups, consider a portable external SSD. That is a use-case distinction—not a proven category-wide performance ranking: the available evidence does not establish that external SSDs are universally faster, more reliable, or better value.
Choose based on the size and update frequency of your backup, device compatibility, security needs, and whether your process consistently saves new and changed files. Either type is removable storage, so both need physical protection and a dependable backup routine.
Which is better for backup: a flash drive or an external SSD?
Neither is a universal winner. A USB flash drive may suit a small set of files or occasional copying. A portable external SSD may be more convenient for a larger backup set or a routine that runs regularly. The right choice depends on the exact devices and workflow—not just the storage category.
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) guidance treats flash drives and external hard drives as removable media and includes PC backups as a use case. It does not provide a head-to-head comparison establishing category-wide speed, price, capacity-per-dollar, write endurance, or failure-rate advantages. Compare the specifications and price of the specific models you are considering.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
When a USB flash drive makes sense
- Your backup set is small enough for the drive’s usable capacity.
- You make occasional copies or need a compact device for file transfer.
- You can reliably reconnect it and remember to copy newly changed files.
- You have checked that its connection, file system, and encryption method work with the devices you will use.
A flash drive is not automatically a complete computer-backup solution. Check that it can hold everything you intend to protect, and make sure your process captures updates rather than only the files present on the day you first copy them.
When a portable external SSD makes sense
- Your backup set is larger or grows over time.
- You plan to make backups regularly and want a removable device for that routine.
- The specific model has enough capacity and connections for your computer and backup workflow.
- You have verified the model’s specifications, warranty, price, and encryption compatibility for your needs.
These are practical reasons to consider an external SSD, not evidence that every SSD beats every flash drive on speed, reliability, or value. Those comparisons require model-specific specifications or testing; a category label alone does not settle them.

What to check before choosing either drive
Backup size and growth
Measure the files you need to protect and consider how much they are likely to grow. Choose capacity for the intended backup set, not just the files you plan to copy today. Confirm whether your backup method keeps earlier versions or replaces files, since that affects how much space the routine needs.
Connection and compatibility
Check the drive’s connector against your computer’s ports, and confirm that the file system can be read and written by the operating systems involved. If you will restore files on a different computer, verify compatibility there too. For encrypted storage, make sure the recovery method works on the device you expect to use for restoration.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)

- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Cost and performance
Compare current prices and manufacturer specifications for the exact models, capacities, and interfaces under consideration. Do not assume that a category-wide speed or price ranking applies to your intended workload; no such ranking is established here.
Handling and storage
Pick a form factor you can store safely and reconnect reliably. Removable drives can be lost, stolen, or physically damaged. Keep the backup somewhere protected when it is not connected, and consider whether one copy stored beside the computer would be exposed to the same risks as the computer itself.

How to secure and maintain a removable backup
NIST SP 800-111 describes full-disk, volume or virtual-disk, and file-or-folder encryption. It says the appropriate approach depends on the storage type, how much information needs protection, the storage environment, and the threats. The publication dates to November 2007; treat it as general security guidance, not a current compatibility guide for a particular drive or operating system.
- Choose encryption that fits your workflow. NIST describes protecting data on a flash drive or external hard drive with volume, virtual-disk, or file/folder encryption. Check that the method is compatible with every device you may need to use for restoration.
- Protect credentials and recovery keys. Encryption can help preserve confidentiality if a drive is lost or stolen, but you still need access to the password, key, or recovery method. Store those credentials securely and separately enough that losing the drive does not also mean losing access to them.
- Test restoration. Restore a sample of files using the device and credentials you expect to have available. A backup that cannot be opened when needed does not meet its purpose.
- Make saving changes repeatable. Set a schedule or use compatible backup software so new and modified files are copied. NIST notes that users need to remember to save changed data to removable media; the device itself does not ensure that happens.
- Protect the physical drive. Store it safely when disconnected and limit access. Encryption addresses access to stored information; it does not prevent loss or physical damage.
NIST SP 1334, published in September 2025, discusses portable storage media in operational-technology environments. It notes that physical data transfer is convenient but can create cybersecurity risks, and recommends procedural, physical, and technical controls in that setting. Its scope is operational technology, so it should not be treated as a consumer incident study; the general reminder is that removable media needs deliberate handling.
Quick Recap
Best Value

- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
A simple decision checklist
- How much data must the backup contain, and how quickly is it growing?
- How often will files change, and how will you ensure those changes are copied?
- Can your computer connect to the drive and read its file system?
- Can you encrypt it in a way that still allows restoration on the devices you need?
- Can you protect the drive, credentials, and recovery process from loss or damage?
- Have you compared current specifications, warranty terms, and price for the exact models?
