Choose a home NAS by working out how much usable storage you need after redundancy, how many bays that requires, and whether the exact model’s memory and backup features suit your household. RAID can keep some systems available after a drive failure, but it is not a backup: plan separate copies you can restore from, including an off-site copy for important data.
Start with capacity, then choose the number of drive bays
A NAS bay is a slot for a drive. More bays can give you more storage options, but the capacity you can actually use depends on the drive layout and the redundancy you choose. Synology’s NAS buyer’s guide notes that the selected RAID type affects how many bays are needed to reach a target capacity.
Estimate your current storage needs, allow for growth, then check the usable capacity for the intended drive and RAID configuration. Do not equate the sum of drive capacities with usable storage: a redundant layout reserves capacity to protect against certain drive failures. The exact result depends on the model, drive sizes, and supported layout.
- Two-bay NAS: A compact starting point for a household with modest storage needs. Check the exact model’s supported layouts and the usable capacity after any redundancy; do not assume every two-bay system offers the same options.
- Four-bay NAS: Offers more room for drives and potential growth, but the additional bays do not automatically mean more usable space if you choose a layout with redundancy. Verify supported configurations on the model you plan to buy.
Synology describes drive redundancy and cloud storage as parts of its home data-protection approach in its file-protection guidance. Treat a higher bay count as flexibility, not as a substitute for checking capacity math or backups.

Choose memory for the workload, not by a universal rule
There is no single RAM amount that is right for every home NAS. Memory requirements depend on the model and what you expect it to do. Synology’s buyer’s guide says heavier applications, including multiple concurrent backups, may require more memory.
Before buying, look up the exact model’s installed memory, supported configurations, maximum capacity, and whether memory can be upgraded. These details can differ even within one product family. For example, QNAP’s TS-x31P3 user guide describes 2 GB and 4 GB variants and model-specific memory upgrade support. That dated example illustrates why the model manual matters; it is not a current shortlist or a recommendation for every home.

- List the services and applications you plan to run alongside file storage.
- Consider whether backups will run concurrently with other demanding tasks.
- Confirm the upgrade limit and compatible memory in the exact model’s documentation before relying on an upgrade path.
Check that the NAS can make backups to separate destinations
Decide where copies of your files will live and how you would restore them. Synology documents backup options that include another local or remote NAS, a USB device, and cloud destinations in its NAS backup guide. Those are examples of options in Synology’s ecosystem, not a promise that every NAS supports the same destinations or software.
Synology’s Knowledge Center recommends the 3-2-1 approach: “3 copies; 2 storage mediums; 1 offsite.” This is vendor guidance, not a guarantee against every failure. A practical plan might keep working files on the NAS, a separate copy on an external USB drive, and another copy at a remote location or in cloud storage. The off-site copy matters if a local incident affects both the NAS and the nearby backup.

Compare backup features by checking whether the system can send copies to a device independent of the primary NAS, retain earlier versions, and restore files in a way your household can use. Verify the destination requirements and restore steps in the software documentation rather than assuming that a backup job is useful simply because it completed.
Versioning and restore details
Version retention can help recover an earlier file state, but the feature and its limits are software-specific. Synology’s Hyper Backup documentation for DSM 7 says Hyper Backup with cross-version deduplication can retain up to 65,535 data versions. This figure applies to that documented feature; it should not be generalized to other NAS systems or backup tools. Check how versions are retained and how a restore is performed for the exact system you select.

Use RAID for availability, not as your backup plan
RAID is a way of arranging drives so that some configurations can tolerate specified drive failures or keep data accessible while a failed drive is replaced. It does not protect against every cause of data loss. Synology warns that RAID crashes and hard-drive failure can still result in data loss, even when a local multi-version copy exists; see its backup guidance.
Keep a separate backup on a different device or service, and include an off-site copy for data you cannot afford to lose. A second copy on the same NAS is not independent of the NAS itself. Synology’s DSM 7.0 User Guide describes RAID and Btrfs features, but the availability of particular layouts and file-system features depends on the model and system.

Compare candidate NAS models against your needs
Once you have a capacity target and a backup plan, compare exact models rather than relying on a brand-wide feature assumption. Use the manufacturer’s current specification and compatibility documentation for the chosen model, as support for bays, RAID, memory, software, and drives varies.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Capacity and bays | Drive-bay count, usable capacity for your chosen layout, and room for expected growth. |
| RAID or storage layout | Layouts supported by the exact model and how each affects capacity and drive-failure tolerance. |
| Memory | Installed RAM, supported configurations, upgradeability, and suitability for planned applications and concurrent backups. |
| Backup and restore | Supported destinations, version retention, restore procedure, and whether a copy can be kept on a separate device or off-site. |
| File system and snapshots | Whether the model and software support the file-system and snapshot features you intend to use. |
| Drive compatibility | Current compatibility guidance for the exact NAS model and the drives you plan to install. |
For each candidate, write down the capacity you need now and later, the drive layout you expect to use, the memory configuration the workload calls for, and the separate backup destinations you can maintain. If a specification or compatibility detail is not clear, consult the model’s current documentation before buying rather than inferring support from a similar model.
