The right AI video generator is the one that can produce your specific deliverable, fit your workflow, and give you enough usable attempts within your budget. Compare the cost of accepted clips—not just the subscription price—and test finalists with the same brief before committing.
How do I choose an AI video generator?
Start with the job you need done, then check the tool’s input modes, editing and audio features, output limits, iteration cost, and business terms. A model that makes an appealing short shot may not be the best choice for a presenter-led explainer, a video edit, or a production workflow shared with a team.
- Define the deliverable. Write down whether you need a short social clip, product video, B-roll, storyboard, cinematic scene, presenter-led explainer, or a modification of existing footage. Adobe’s video generator page describes use cases including social clips, product and marketing video, B-roll, motion graphics, storyboards, concept work, and cinematic scenes.
- Specify the format and source material. Note the target aspect ratio, duration, resolution, and whether you will start from text, an image, or existing video. Record whether the clip needs dialogue, sound effects, music, a consistent character or product, or several shots that match.
- Match the workflow. Check whether the service supports text-to-video, image-to-video, video-to-video editing, reference controls, audio, and downstream editing. Also check whether it can assemble clips, export the format you need, and support team collaboration. A list of models alone does not answer those workflow questions.
- Estimate the cost of usable output. For the exact plan and model, calculate the cost of a generation at your intended duration, resolution, and audio settings. Add credits for likely retries and any top-ups. Check whether credits renew, expire, or roll over.
- Trial finalists with the same brief. Keep the prompt, source image or video, duration, and aspect ratio consistent. Score prompt adherence, motion continuity, visual consistency, audio, editability, and how many rerolls it takes to get a clip you would actually publish.
- Check business and operational fit. Before using generated video in paid or client work, review the provider’s current terms for commercial use, ownership or license, privacy and training use, watermarking, content restrictions, retention, and availability in your region.
Which AI video generator is best for my budget?
There is no universal winner, and the available figures do not support a reliable cross-provider ranking by price per finished minute. Choose based on the work you need the tool to do. The table is a shortlist framework, not a claim that one provider is best in a category.
| Your main need | What to prioritize | Evidence to check in a trial |
|---|---|---|
| Short generated shots or B-roll | Text-to-video and image-to-video options, clip duration, aspect ratio, and the cost of each generation | Whether motion and subject details remain consistent, and how many attempts produce a usable shot |
| Product or marketing video | Image-to-video, control over the product’s appearance, editing options, and export workflow | Whether the product stays recognizable and whether the result fits the intended placement |
| Storyboard, concept, or cinematic scene | Prompt and reference controls, visual consistency across shots, and an affordable way to iterate | How closely the output follows the brief and how much manual editing it needs |
| Presenter-led explainer or dialogue | Speech and audio capabilities, timing, editing, and any separate costs for audio features | Whether dialogue, sound, and visuals work together in the deliverable you need |
| Changes to existing footage | Video-to-video editing or stylization, controls over what changes, and preservation of important details | Whether the edit changes only what you intended and retains useful parts of the original |
| Team or broader content workflow | Collaboration, clip assembly, editing, export formats, and integration with the tools you already use | Whether the whole production process works—not just the initial generation |
For example, Adobe describes its video generator as working from text prompts or images and offering comparisons among partner models. That can be relevant if model choice and a broader creative workflow matter to you; the available product information here does not establish a current plan price or video-credit allowance. Compare the workflow and trial results with your own requirements rather than assuming model access alone settles the choice.

How much does AI video generation cost per clip?
The subscription price is only one part of the cost. A useful comparison is the total monthly spend divided by the number of clips you accept after retries, plus any relevant top-ups. Include the exact model, duration, resolution, audio setting, and editing mode: each can change credit use, and a generated clip may still need substantial editing before it is usable.
Runway credit example
Runway’s official credit guidance, accessed in 2026, lists Gen-4.5 at 12 credits per generated second. On that rate, a five-second generation uses 60 credits and a ten-second generation uses 120 credits, before any additional workflow costs. The same guidance lists these consumer-plan allowances:
| Runway plan | Credits listed | Five-second Gen-4.5 generations at 60 credits each | Ten-second Gen-4.5 generations at 120 credits each |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 125 one time; does not expire or refresh after use | 2, with 5 credits left | 1, with 5 credits left |
| Standard | 625 monthly | 10, with 25 credits left | 5, with 25 credits left |
| Pro | 2,250 monthly | 37, with 30 credits left | 18, with 90 credits left |
| Unlimited | 2,250 monthly | 37, with 30 credits left | 18, with 90 credits left |
| Max | 9,500 monthly | 158, with 20 credits left | 79, with 20 credits left |
These are arithmetic maximums for generations at the stated rate, not estimates of finished or accepted clips. They assume all listed credits go to Gen-4.5 generations of the stated length, with no extra workflow costs or retries beyond the count shown. In Runway’s guidance, Standard, Pro, and Unlimited plan credits expire on the billing date; purchased credits do not expire. Check the current plan details and model rates before budgeting, since access and rates can change.

Include retries in your estimate
Runway’s Standard-plan guidance cautions: “Just like any tool in the creative process, AI video generation can take multiple attempts before achieving the best result.” That makes a one-render calculation a poor estimate of production cost. If a trial suggests that you typically need several attempts per accepted clip, multiply the per-generation cost by that number, then account for any editing or other workflow costs.

A practical comparison sheet can use this calculation:
Estimated cost per accepted clip = (plan cost allocated to video work + top-ups) ÷ accepted clips produced.

- Edit your videos and pictures to perfection with a host of helpful editing tools.
- Create amazing videos with fun effects and interesting transitions.
- Record or add audio clips to your video, or simply pull stock sounds from the NCH Sound Library.
- Enhance your audio tracks with impressive audio effects, like Pan, Reverb or Echo.
- Share directly online to Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms or burn directly to disc.
Keep the assumptions beside the result: plan period, model, generation length, settings, retries per accepted clip, and whether editing or audio is included. If you split a subscription across several uses, allocate only the share used for video generation; do not treat the entire plan as a video cost unless that is how you use it.
How many credits does an AI video generator use?
There is no standard credit value across providers, or even necessarily across models and tasks within one service. Runway’s model documentation distinguishes generation, video editing or stylization, and audio or workflow tools, with different credit rates. Check the rate for the exact operation you plan to use rather than treating all credits as interchangeable seconds of video.

Its API page lists a rate of $0.01 per API credit; do not multiply consumer plan credits by that API rate to estimate the value or price of a subscription.

Runway also gives a Standard-plan example of 31 images with Gemini 3 Pro (1K) for 620 credits. Treat that as the provider’s example allocation, not an independent performance result or a video-generation benchmark.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a free AI video generator enough for commercial videos?
A free tier can be useful for exploring a tool or testing whether its workflow suits you, but its allowance may be one-time, limited, or exclude the model and features you need. Runway lists 125 Free-plan credits as a one-time allocation that does not expire but does not refresh after use. At 12 credits per second for Gen-4.5, that would cover two five-second generations or one ten-second generation, with five credits left, before additional workflow costs.
Credits alone do not establish whether a free plan is suitable for commercial work. Review the provider’s current rules for commercial use, license or ownership, watermarking, privacy and training use, content restrictions, and retention. These terms can differ by provider, plan, feature, and region; confirm the terms that apply to your account before using a clip in paid work.

What should I test before choosing?
Use one realistic brief that reflects the work you will actually publish, not an unusually easy prompt. Run it through each finalist with the same source material and settings, and keep a simple record of the outcome.
- Prompt adherence: Did the clip contain the requested subject, action, setting, and framing?
- Motion continuity: Did movement look coherent through the full clip?
- Visual consistency: Did the subject, product, or scene retain the important details from frame to frame?
- Audio and dialogue: If needed, were timing, speech, and sound usable without a separate workflow?
- Editability: Could you make the changes required for the final deliverable?
- Rerolls and usable output: How many generations did it take to get a clip you would accept, and what did those attempts consume?
- Operational fit: Could you collaborate, export in the required format, and complete the work in the tools your team uses?
Choose the service that clears your quality and workflow requirements at a repeatable cost. If none passes the same-brief trial, a lower sticker price will not fix the mismatch.
