1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWireless Android Auto setup starts with Bluetooth pairing, but it only works when both the phone and the exact car or stereo support wireless Android Auto. Google also requires a phone with 5 GHz Wi-Fi support and an active data plan. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on while pairing, then follow the car’s prompts or open Android Auto on its display.
What happens when you connect wirelessly
Google documents the setup sequence, not the complete wireless transport architecture. The first wireless connection requires pairing the phone and car over Bluetooth. After pairing, follow any on-screen instructions; Android Auto should start within a few seconds, though you may need to tap Android Auto on the car display. Google’s instructions do not specify which radio carries the Android Auto projection after pairing or explain the precise division of work between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so it is not possible to describe that part reliably from these sources.
What your phone and car need
Phone requirements
Google’s Android Auto requirements list a compatible Android phone, an active data plan, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support for wireless use. The page lists these minimum Android versions by phone category:
- Android 11.0 for any phone.
- Android 10.0 for Google or Samsung phones.
- Android 9.0 for Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8.
These are the categories on Google’s requirements page, not a guarantee that every phone with that Android version can connect. Check the current page and your phone maker’s specifications for 5 GHz support. Google also notes additional regulatory requirements for using 5 GHz Wi-Fi in a car in the EU; check the page for your country because localized guidance and listed details can differ.

Car or stereo requirements
The vehicle or stereo must support wireless Android Auto. A USB port, or support for wired Android Auto, does not establish wireless compatibility. Check the exact vehicle, trim, or aftermarket receiver with its manufacturer. Google’s compatibility guidance covers wireless requirements, while its troubleshooting guidance notes that a compatible car or aftermarket unit is required.
Set up the first wireless connection
- Confirm that your phone meets Google’s wireless requirements and that the exact car or stereo supports wireless Android Auto.
- Park the car and turn on its infotainment system. On the phone, turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services, and make sure mobile data service is available.
- Pair the phone with the car through the phone’s Bluetooth menu, following any instructions shown by the vehicle.
- Follow the prompts on the phone and car display. If Android Auto does not open automatically, tap Android Auto on the car display.
Google’s setup instructions specify these pairing conditions and steps.

What to check if wireless Android Auto will not connect
- Check the phone. Verify the supported Android version category, 5 GHz Wi-Fi capability, and active data plan against Google’s requirements.
- Check the car system. Confirm wireless support for the exact vehicle, trim, or aftermarket stereo. Do not assume a USB port or wired Android Auto means wireless is available.
- Retry setup with the recommended conditions. Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services; keep the car in Park with infotainment on; and pair through the phone’s Bluetooth menu while following the car’s instructions.
- Open Android Auto from the display. If pairing completes but the app does not launch, follow any prompts or tap Android Auto on the car screen.
- Escalate unresolved connection problems. Google advises checking compatibility and connection issues or contacting the vehicle manufacturer if the phone still cannot connect. Its setup help does not provide a complete, model-independent diagnosis for connections that start and later drop.
What the available guidance does—and does not—establish about dropouts
Google’s public setup and requirements pages establish the prerequisites and first-pairing sequence, but they do not quantify how distance, interference, phone placement, or software versions affect wireless stability. They also do not offer a universal fault tree for an intermittent connection. Because behavior can depend on the particular phone and vehicle system, use the vehicle manufacturer’s support for model-specific connection issues rather than treating any one cause as certain.
