Center the headband, seat both ear cups evenly, and make small fit adjustments before your workout. Then check the fit during the movements that tend to dislodge the headphones. These steps may help, but they are not a guaranteed fix: over-ear headphones can joggle during running, and many models are not designed to stay securely in place during training.
Adjust the fit before you start
- Center the headband. Set it evenly across your head rather than letting it sit at an angle.
- Seat both ear cups evenly. Position each cup over the ear and check that one side is not sitting higher or farther forward than the other.
- Make small adjustments. Change the headband position or extension a little at a time, then move your head to see whether the headphones stay put. Do not tighten them until the fit hurts; the sources do not establish a recommended clamping force or a universal sizing method.
- Test the movement you plan to do. Walk, bend, or perform a controlled version of the exercise before relying on the fit during a full session. A fit that holds during lifting may not hold during running.
This is a practical troubleshooting check, not a proven fitting protocol for every head shape or headphone model. If the headphones continue to shift, changing the model or form factor may be more effective than repeatedly tightening the headband.
Why running can make over-ear headphones move
Running creates repeated up-and-down motion that can dislodge over-ear headphones even when they feel secure while standing. Philips says, “The motion of running will inevitably make even the most secure-fitting over-ear headphones joggle up and down on your head.” That is Philips’ guidance, not an independent test of every model. RTINGS also cautions that many over-ear headphones are not designed to stay securely in place during training.
For walking or controlled gym exercises, assess the fit in the specific movements you will perform. For running, expect a greater chance of movement; no general adjustment in the available guidance guarantees that a standard over-ear model will remain stable.

Account for sweat, heat, and care
Over-ear headphones can make you sweat more during exercise, and repeated exposure to sweat may create issues that are not covered by a manufacturer’s warranty, according to RTINGS’ 2026 workout-headphone guide, updated July 8, 2026. Check your own model’s warranty and care instructions, and let the headphones dry between sessions. Do not assume that an exercise-oriented label or a feature on another model means your headphones are sweat-resistant.
When to consider a different design
If your headphones keep slipping during the activity you do, compare alternatives by their actual fit, activity suitability, sweat rating, cushion care, and comfort. The product features below are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative fit results; availability can vary by region.

| Option | What the maker says | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Beats 360 (over-ear) | Beats positions this model for gym use and describes an ergonomic headband intended to add comfort and stability, interchangeable cushions, and an IPX4 rating for non-water sports and exercise. | IPX4 is a model-specific rating, not a claim that the headphones are waterproof. Check fit during your own activity, regional availability, and current care and warranty terms. |
| Philips ActionFit SHQ5200/10 (on-ear) | Philips describes a silicone-grip headband and detachable, washable cushions. | This is on-ear, not over-ear. Check whether its fit, comfort, sweat handling, and availability suit your needs. |
| Philips SHQ3200/28 (in-ear with earhook) | Philips describes an adjustable earhook on this sports model. | This is a different form factor, not an over-ear accessory or adjustment. |
There is no supported basis here for treating a generic headband, headphone cover, or replacement cushion as a proven anti-slip fix. A grip feature or sweat rating on one product also cannot be assumed to apply to another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose if you replace them
- Match the design to the activity: assess stability for your actual workout, especially if it includes running or other repeated movement.
- Check the form factor: decide whether you require over-ear headphones or would consider on-ear or earhook designs.
- Read the specific sweat rating: confirm what it covers and what it does not; do not interpret a rating as waterproofing unless the manufacturer says so.
- Consider cleaning and comfort: look for care instructions and whether cushions are removable or washable, then weigh those features against comfort and fit.
Beats’ Beats 360 is one manufacturer-positioned over-ear example for gym use, while Philips’ SHQ5200/10 and SHQ3200/28 illustrate on-ear and earhook alternatives. The cited product descriptions do not establish a numerical stability ranking or prove that any option will fit every wearer.
