There is no single best graphics preset for every horror game. Start with the game’s recommended settings, test a repeatable scene, and adjust one option at a time. If performance is short of your target, check upscaling and render resolution first, then consider reducing costly effects such as ray tracing. Keep the lighting and image details that matter to you whenever your frame delivery allows.

Why there is no universal horror-game preset

Games differ in their engines, lighting designs, graphics features, and hardware demands. Even the target can vary: the official Until Dawn PC specifications list a recommended tier targeting an average of 60 fps at 1080p, while a higher tier targets 60 fps at 1440p or 30 fps at 4K. Those are published targets for Until Dawn, not a standard for horror games generally.

Use your game’s own recommended hardware and performance guidance as the starting point. Your display, PC, and preference for visual quality or smoothness determine what trade-offs make sense.

Use a repeatable settings pass

  1. Check the game’s PC requirements and graphics options. Note its recommended hardware, supported features, and any stated resolution or frame-rate targets. Do not assume a feature is available just because another horror game offers it.
  2. Choose a starting point. Select a preset near your PC’s hardware tier, then load a scene that reliably stresses the game—for example, a demanding area you can revisit under similar conditions.
  3. Observe performance and image quality. Pay attention to perceived smoothness as well as average FPS. Where available, frame-time data can reveal uneven delivery that a single average may hide. AMD’s Radeon Game Advisor documentation describes reporting average FPS and 95th-percentile frame time, graphing frame times, and suggesting changes to available in-game settings. The tool’s recommendations must be applied manually, and support is limited to compatible Radeon configurations and games; see AMD’s Game Advisor support page.
  4. Change one option at a time. Apply an adjustment, replay the same scene, and compare both smoothness and visual quality. That makes it easier to tell whether the change helped on your hardware and in that game.
  5. Stop when the trade-off is no longer worthwhile. A higher frame rate is not automatically a better result if the image loses details you care about or the game becomes harder to read.

What to lower first when FPS is too low

There is no guaranteed order that works for every game. Resolution and ray tracing can have a substantial performance impact, while texture quality is often more demanding on video memory than on compute, according to MSI’s general guide to graphics settings and performance. These are broad tendencies, not fixed outcomes for every engine or graphics card.

Check upscaling and render resolution

If the game offers DLSS or FSR, try its available modes and compare them at your display’s output resolution. Upscaling renders the image at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs it for the display, trading image quality against performance. Results, visual quality, and compatibility depend on the game, hardware, and implementation; there is no cross-game evidence here establishing one upscaler as the winner.

When upscaling is unavailable or does not help enough, try lowering the render scale or output resolution if the game allows it. Inspect fine details and overall clarity as well as frame delivery, since a faster image may be too soft for your preference.

Consider ray tracing and other costly effects

If performance remains below your goal, test ray tracing—especially reflections or global illumination—at a lower setting or off. In some games, conventional screen-space ambient occlusion (SSAO) can be a less costly alternative to ray-traced effects, but whether it is available and how it looks depends on the title. Epic’s ray-tracing optimization guide notes that ray-traced reflections can be especially demanding and that the available controls vary from game to game.

Ray tracing can affect reflections, ambient occlusion, or shadows, but both its cost and visual contribution depend on the implementation. The Medium is one specific example: NVIDIA describes its split-reality scenes as an additional rendering workload and reports that those sections account for about a third of gameplay, citing Bloober Team. That description is not a benchmark or a rule for other horror games; see NVIDIA’s The Medium article.

Adjust texture quality with video memory in mind

Textures can use more video memory without being the biggest compute cost. If a game stutters or struggles when loading detailed assets, test a lower texture setting and compare; do not assume lowering textures is the best way to improve FPS on every system. The impact depends on the game and your hardware.

Revisit the overall preset only if needed

If individual changes are hard to manage, try the next lower overall quality preset, then restore specific options that matter to you. This is a practical reset point, not a guarantee that every option in the preset has the same performance impact.

Keep the atmosphere—and make the game readable

Darkness, lighting, shadows, fog, reflections, and post-processing are artistic choices, and their role differs by game. There is no evidence that one of these effects is essential to every horror game’s atmosphere. Keep the settings that contribute most to the experience you want, provided performance remains acceptable.

Use the game’s own brightness or gamma calibration and follow its on-screen guidance. Treat the intended calibration scene as your reference rather than applying a universal horror-game brightness value: no single setting is supported across games, displays, and rooms. If you cannot distinguish important details, adjust the calibration enough to make play comfortable without assuming that making every dark area bright is the right fix.

How to judge whether a change is worth keeping

Compare each option in the same gameplay scene, not just in a menu or a different area. Weigh these factors together:

  • Frame delivery: Does the game feel smoother, and do frame-time measurements, when available, look more consistent?
  • Clarity: Is the image still clear at your display’s output resolution?
  • Visual contribution: Does the changed effect noticeably improve this particular game’s lighting, reflections, or shadows?
  • Compatibility: Does the game support the feature on your hardware, and does it behave as expected?
  • Comfort and readability: Can you comfortably see and follow the action without losing the intended mood?

Feature support and results can change with game patches and graphics drivers. Recheck after major updates rather than assuming an old settings balance still applies.

Game-specific examples are not universal rules

Until Dawn’s official PC page lists DLSS 3.7 and FSR 3.1, while NVIDIA’s article on The Medium describes that game’s DLSS presets. Those examples show that upscaling options vary by title; they do not establish that every horror game supports either technology or that its results will be the same.

Likewise, NVIDIA’s Control graphics and performance guide reports a title-specific SSAO cost of 4–5 FPS with ray tracing off and about 1–3 FPS with it on. The figures lack established test-hardware and test-date details in the cited passage, so they should not be treated as expected savings in another game or on another PC.
