To use Android Auto over USB, park the car, turn on its infotainment system, connect your phone to a compatible USB port with a high-quality data cable, and follow the prompts on both screens. If Android Auto keeps reconnecting wirelessly, Google does not document a universal wired-preference switch; check your vehicle’s manual for model-specific controls.

Check that your phone and car support wired Android Auto

Google lists a phone running Android 9.0 or later with an active data plan, an Android Auto-compatible car or stereo, and a high-quality USB cable as requirements for wired use. A USB socket alone does not mean a vehicle supports Android Auto. If you are unsure, check with the car or stereo manufacturer. Google’s requirements page has further compatibility details.

Wireless projection has separate requirements: a compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, plus a compatible car or stereo. Google’s page says wireless projection is compatible with phones running Android 11.0. Compatibility can vary by vehicle, year, trim and head unit, so confirm your specific setup with the manufacturer rather than assuming a car that supports wired Android Auto also supports wireless.

Connect Android Auto with a USB cable

  1. Park and turn on the infotainment system. Complete setup before driving.
  2. Connect the cable. Plug a suitable USB data cable into the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port and connect the other end to your phone.
  3. Follow the prompts. Respond to instructions on the phone and car display. Your phone may ask for an update. Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones; Google says you do not need a separate Play Store download for car-display use. See Google’s Android Auto setup instructions.

If Android Auto switches back to wireless

Google explains wired setup and first-time wireless pairing, but its general help does not specify a universal setting that makes every vehicle prefer a USB connection. Connect the phone by cable and consult the vehicle manual for controls specific to your head unit, including any setting or pairing option that affects connection mode.

Choose a cable that can carry data

Google recommends a high-quality cable and notes that not all cables work with all cars. Try the cable supplied with your phone, or choose a compatible cable that matches the connectors on both the phone and vehicle. For third-party cables, Google suggests checking USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) compliance. Its practical guidance is to use a cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet), without a USB hub or extension. Google’s troubleshooting help puts it this way: “For the best quality and reliability when you connect to Android Auto try a high-quality USB cable.”

Troubleshoot a wired connection that will not start

  • Check the vehicle settings: Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system, then restart that system.
  • Try another cable: If the connection used to work but has stopped, test a replacement high-quality USB cable.
  • Check aftermarket receiver software: Visit the receiver manufacturer’s website to see whether a firmware update is available.
  • Reconnect to another car: If the phone has trouble connecting to a second car, Google suggests forgetting previously connected cars and plugging the phone into the car again.
  • Verify compatibility: If the connection still fails, consult the vehicle or stereo manufacturer.

Set up wireless Android Auto again if needed

For first-time wireless setup, pair the phone and car through Bluetooth. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services on during setup, and complete pairing while parked with the infotainment system on. Android Auto should start within seconds after Bluetooth pairing; if it does not, follow the display prompts or tap Android Auto on the car’s screen. Google’s setup page covers both connection methods.
