Wired Android Auto does not use Wi-Fi for the phone-to-car connection. It connects over USB. But Google lists an active mobile data plan for wired Android Auto and recommends having the phone within range of a mobile data network during setup. That means no Wi-Fi is different from no cellular data: Google does not document a no-plan or no-service setup as supported, and offline behavior can vary by app.
Do you need Wi-Fi for wired Android Auto?
No. For wired Android Auto, the USB cable links the phone to the vehicle; Google’s setup instructions do not list Wi-Fi as a requirement for that connection. Google lists 5 GHz Wi-Fi support as a requirement for wireless projection instead. See Google’s Android Auto requirements and setup instructions.
So if you have no Wi-Fi but still have cellular service and a data plan, Wi-Fi itself should not prevent wired projection. This does not guarantee that every phone, vehicle, or app will work in every circumstance.
Can you use Android Auto with no cell service or data plan?
Google’s published wired requirements include an Android phone running Android 9.0 (Pie) or later with an active data plan, a compatible car, and a high-quality USB cable. Its setup guidance also says to ensure the phone is within range of a mobile data network. Google does not confirm that a phone with no active plan or no cellular service is a supported configuration.

The available guidance does not establish that the USB projection link always fails the moment cellular service disappears, either. The practical distinction is that USB provides the connection between phone and car, not an internet connection. If service is absent, online-dependent features may stop working even if the display connection is active.
What works offline—and what may not?
Android Auto can display compatible phone apps for functions such as navigation, calls, messages, and media. Whether an app works offline depends on that app and what is already stored on the phone; the USB connection does not make online content available. Google notes that media apps may require sign-in, a subscription, or a premium account. Check with the app’s developer about offline playback or other offline functions. See Google’s media guidance.

Do not assume that Google’s instructions for cars with Google built-in describe Android Auto projected from a phone. For the built-in product, Google says offline Maps requires maps downloaded in advance, real-time traffic is unavailable offline, and downloaded maps expire after one year. Those conditions apply to Google built-in, not automatically to phone-projected Android Auto. See Google’s guidance for cars with Google built-in.

A USB port alone does not mean a car supports Android Auto. Confirm compatibility for the exact vehicle or aftermarket stereo, phone, country, and USB port; Google directs drivers to the vehicle manual or manufacturer for vehicle-specific help.

- Use the correct port and cable: Connect a high-quality USB cable to the vehicle’s designated Android Auto USB port and the phone. Check the owner’s manual for the correct port; confirm the cable fits both devices.
- Follow the on-screen prompts: Google’s setup steps call for the phone to be in range of mobile data service and for drivers to follow the prompts after connecting.
- If it still will not connect: Check the cable and connection, recheck vehicle compatibility, and consult the vehicle manufacturer. Google’s troubleshooting guidance also covers compatibility and cable issues.
If the immediate question is about losing signal, distinguish three cases: no Wi-Fi while cellular data remains available; no cellular reception at the moment; or no active mobile data plan. Google explicitly lists the plan requirement, while the behavior of individual offline apps depends on their developers and any content downloaded in advance.
