A washer’s general steam option does not, by itself, prove that it sanitizes clothing or reduces allergens. Those results depend on the exact model and cycle: a manufacturer may document an allergen-reduction cycle, a bacteria-focused Sanitize cycle, or only a steam pretreatment. Check the washer’s manual and the garment care label before choosing a cycle.
Steam, allergen reduction, and sanitizing are different claims
A Steam button may add steam before the main wash to help loosen stains; that is not the same as a tested allergen-reduction result or a bacteria-focused sanitizing claim. For example, LG says its Steam function pretreats laundry before the main wash, while its separate Allergiene cycle is described as reducing common household allergens. LG support and LG steam-use guidance explain these functions for LG products.
Allergen reduction and sanitization should not be treated as interchangeable. An allergen cycle is intended to reduce specified allergens; a Sanitize cycle makes a bacteria-focused claim for the named organisms and conditions. A sanitize label alone does not establish that the cycle reduces dust mites, pet dander, or another particular allergen.
What manufacturers document for named cycles

Percentages are meaningful only alongside the tested target, cycle, and protocol. Do not compare headline figures as if they measured the same thing: the LG pages describe different claims, and the Whirlpool figures refer to different cycle purposes.

How to choose the right cycle
- Find the exact washer model and its manual. Identify the named cycle and read its description. A generic Steam option may only pretreat laundry; on LG machines, the steam guidance says it heats a small amount of water before the main wash and adds time to the cycle. LG steam-use guidance
- Match the cycle to the goal. For allergen reduction, look for a cycle with a documented allergen target and test or certification. For a bacteria-focused claim, inspect the Sanitize-cycle documentation and the organisms it names.
- Check what was tested. Note the allergen or organism, reported result, and any protocol or certification. A result for dust mites does not automatically establish a result for every allergen.
- Check fabric compatibility. Follow the garment care label and the washer manual. LG cautions against steam for wool, silk, leather, and easily discolored fabrics. LG support and LG steam-use guidance
What a steam cycle cannot promise
The documented claims here apply to specific named cycles and products. They do not show that steam washing generally makes clothes allergen-free, prevents allergy symptoms, or sterilizes every garment. The manufacturer materials cited here also do not provide an independent, cross-brand comparison of ordinary steam-only options.
For laundry products used to address bacteria, follow their label directions and the garment’s care instructions. Whirlpool’s general guidance notes that sanitize cycles use extra-hot washing or drying to help fight particular common household bacteria and advises checking care labels when using laundry sanitizer or bleach. Before buying a washer
Compare the exact model’s manual and current certification rather than shopping by the word “steam.” Check whether it has a dedicated allergen-reduction cycle, what that cycle claims to target, and whether the garments you intend to wash can tolerate its conditions. Cycle names, documented results, and certifications can vary by model and market.
