The best Windows 11 search option depends on what you need to find. Start with Windows Search for apps and indexed files, use Everything when your main goal is finding files by name, and choose PowerToys Command Palette for a keyboard-first way to launch apps and run tasks. Before adding a tool, check that Windows is indexing the folders and file contents you need.

No controlled, current head-to-head benchmark establishes one of these tools as universally fastest. Choose by search coverage and workflow, not an unsupported speed ranking.
How to improve Windows Search before replacing it
Windows Search is built into Windows 11. Search from the taskbar or Start, or open File Explorer and search the selected folder or This PC. Windows indexing can catalog file names, paths, properties, and the contents of supported file types when configured to do so. If a result is missing, first check which locations and file types are in the index.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows and review the indexed locations and search mode. Make sure the folders or drives you need are included.
- Open Advanced indexing options to inspect the index and its location coverage. Add relevant locations if needed.
- In the advanced options, review the file types list. For a relevant file type, check whether Windows indexes properties only or properties and file contents. Content results depend on both support and configuration.
- Give a new or substantially changed index time to complete. Microsoft says initial indexing can take up to a couple of hours; after that, Windows updates the index in the background. See Microsoft’s search-indexing guidance.
- Search again in File Explorer or Start. If you still cannot find an item, confirm that it is stored in an indexed location and that its file type is configured for the kind of search you are doing.
The index’s size depends on the files and indexing configuration. Microsoft gives a rule of thumb that it is below 10 percent of the size of the indexed files, while noting that many small files or code can increase the proportion. On Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft also documents semantic indexing for listed document and image formats, using locally stored semantic-index data. Best alternatives and when they fit
PowerToys Command Palette: a keyboard-first command center
Command Palette is a customizable, extensible interface for launching apps, running commands, searching files, browsing the web, and reaching Windows tools. Microsoft documents Win+Alt+Space as its default shortcut; Command Palette must be enabled and running in the background. Type an app name to launch it. For files, choose Search files or use the file prefix; type $ to navigate Windows Settings. See Microsoft Learn’s Command Palette documentation.
Choose it when you want one keyboard-driven entry point for several actions, not just a dedicated list of filename matches. File search is a specific action within the palette rather than its only purpose.

Everything: focused search by filename or folder name
Everything’s official product page describes it as a Windows file-search engine, highlighting quick file indexing and instant filename searching. It also lists fast startup, low resource use, a small database, real-time updating, offline operation, and no telemetry or user-data collection. Those are the vendor’s stated product characteristics, not a comparative benchmark.
Consider Everything when your main frustration is finding files or folders by name. The cited feature description does not establish it as an all-purpose app or settings launcher, or as a general tool for searching inside document contents.

PowerToys Run: a launcher that can use the Windows index
PowerToys Run provides a launcher, and its Windows Search plugin finds files and folders covered by the Windows Search index. It can be convenient if you already use Microsoft’s index and want file lookup alongside app launching. It does not inherently solve missing coverage: excluded drives, folders, or file types remain a Windows indexing issue. Microsoft notes that Enhanced mode can index across all drives. Fluent Search, Listary, and Flow Launcher: investigate the workflow and current version
A Windows Central comparison published September 17, 2025 describes Fluent Search as offering its own file indexer or Windows Search, Listary as integrating with File Explorer and file dialogs, and Flow Launcher as a plugin-extensible launcher that can use Everything’s index through its Explorer plugin. These descriptions are useful starting points, but product behavior and support can change. Check the current vendor documentation and release details for each tool before choosing.

In particular, verify the supported Windows versions, how the tool indexes files, whether it searches contents or names, and whether Explorer integration or the relevant plugin is available in the version you plan to use. The comparison is Windows Central’s list of Windows 11 search tools.

Make the choice
- Windows Search is missing results: inspect index locations and file-type content settings first; an added launcher that queries the same index will inherit its coverage limits.
- You mainly need names of files and folders: try Everything’s focused search workflow.
- You want one keyboard shortcut for apps and actions: use Command Palette; use PowerToys Run if you specifically want a launcher whose Windows Search plugin consults the Windows index.
- You want Explorer or file-dialog integration, a separate index, or plugins: compare the current versions of Fluent Search, Listary, and Flow Launcher against those needs, and verify the features directly with their vendors.
